So my E6420 took down my Biostar 965PT and I would like to upgrade rather than just reinstalling windows back on with the Gigabyte 965 mobo and cedar mill celeron I'm using now.

I really can't afford much but I can't take silde show frame rates anymore. I don't have access to micro center so ordering online is really my best option. My basic hardware is a

Antec 1080AMG soon changing to a Sonata 2
OCZ 550watt PSU
Celly 352
Gigabyte GA965 dsp or something like that
2gigs ddr2@667mhz
Nvidia 8600GTS
A couple sata hds and pata dvds

SO I guess the question is would I be better off spending money on a dead socket with a q6600 or something like that, going to 4gigs of DDR2 800 or better and getting a better video card(6870?) or getting a new 1156/1155 board and a I5?. I don't really know whats on the horizon but I hate throwing money at old hardware. Figuring I can probably get ram a video card and a q6600 for around $300or less vs spending $500 is the difference worth it?

You mean 1155? It doesn't have to be very expensive at all to get a big upgrade. For example:

i3 2120 $120
Biostar H61MGC $40 AR
DDR3 1333 8GB $32
6850 $130 AR AP
Total: $322

This will be faster than a Q6600 for about the same money that you had been planning on spending. Also keep in mind that any new board will require all SATA drives.

NO I'm actually thinking 1156 due to some cheaper quality boards and the fact it overclocks on all cpus. Something like a Asus p7p55 lx and a I3-560 or I5-660.

Hell no, unless you can get CPU and mobo together for $100 or so. Sandy Bridge is quite a bit faster.
