1156 i5 install crunching noise

Just built an i5 rig with gigabyte ud3r mobo. After installing the cpu and lining up the notches... pressing down the lever makes a crunching sound. Is this normal? Has anyone else ever had this sound when they installed their cpu? Thanks for your response^_^

Yes it's the sound of the pins on the LGA socket.
It's a subtle crunch not say the sound of snapping a DIMM in half. (or trying to!)

I also built an i5 and the same thing happened to me. It was a little concerning, but as far as I can tell, it's normal.

Normal. As long as you have the CPU in the rim of the socket and lined up properly, you should be fine.

Now as for the latching mechanism... I absolutely hate the LGA designs that are currently "popular" for Intel's chips.

They aren't popular, they are required! Only Intel loves them and the $7 per socket royalty that comes with each one.

Ok, thanks everyone for the replies. That sound was just scary with the crunching noise..no snapping though. Whew.

Ah yes, the CPU crunch. That sound haunted me for days after I built my 1156 rig. Especially when I ran into some initial trouble with it, which of course were completely unrelated.

Having installed a 1156 CPU in a mobo with a Lotes socket and also with a Foxconn, the Lotes made a lot more of a crunch sound, perhaps because it makes better overall contact with the CPU?
