1155 i5 3570k vs. 1366 i7 980 (vs. 1366 i7 960)

I'm debating which setup to keep. I mainly just surf the interweb, run some development software (visual studio) and occasionally sql db's, and every now and then game on occasion (BF3, borderlands 2 soon).

I'm also debating picking up a 1155 i7 3770K.

I pretty much ruled out the 2011 / X79s just due to the price performance ratio not feeling worth the upgrade over the 1366/X58.

Which would you keep, or would you just pick up a 3770K?

The motherboards I have are the socket 1366 Asus p6t-se, P6X58-E Pro, and the socket 1155 P8Z77-V LK if that factors into your thoughts. I will/have overclocked whatever I keep at least somewhat.

I'm more concerned with speed than electricity. I have a noctua cooler d14 and a few ssds so the rest of the system should be fast/well cooled.
 
Well I have all the above parts laying around so I will need to choose which one I will keep. Hopefully haswell will offer a serious performance upgrade not like the underwhelming X58-X79 upgrade.
 
It seems to be a unanimous consensus to go with ivy bridge. Good to get some opinions, that's what I'll keep then.

That is the closest comparable comparison (i7 970 6 core vs. i5 2500k 4 core).
It's give and take, the 970 is faster when it can utilize threads, a bit slower otherwise.

I'll overclock somewhat too.

I skipped the socket-1366 boards and processors. Personally, given fact that I'm running an i7-2600K, I'm watching to see what will happen per the IHS/TIM situation on the Ivy. But these current Ivy releases are about as over-clockable as the Sandies, and represents some improvements overall. I don't think the Nehalem cores had an iGPU, so if the Z77 mobo has the ports to use it, you could take your time looking for a graphics card if you don't already have one -- or even want one at that point. . .
 
Resurrecting this thread as I'm going to make a decision on this.

On the one hand I've got the i7 980 setup with windows installed etc. and when I run through the numbers (between 2500k and 970 the closest I found) there's not a ton of difference. I'm almost tempted to keep the 980 just cause it's such a toss up and I hardly see the benefit of bothering with the 3570k.

The power consumption is about 50w but I don't care about that and the rest are basically trading blows. Overclocking may make a difference but the 3570k isn't necessarily the best anyway (idk how the 980 is).
 
Good reason to keep the 3570 is the better Sata/USB3/PCIe specs. Imho at least, and 1366 stuff still brings great money used, which won't always be true.

It's really win/win, but that's my thoughts on the matter.
