ROTK is overrated. Too drawn out. I guess it's good if you have a fetish for an old geezer with white hair, beard, and robe, carrying a white staff and riding a white horse around a castle.

which is why it won 11 oscars. HAHAHA.

well its competition was rather shoddy.... supposedly artsy films that are good because studios say they are:p like mystic river etc.

rotk was kewl thuogh, cept for the whole undead bit which seemed like a cop out.

it is in the books though. Actually I think in the book the undead stay around longer to the black gates

Yeah, it had been a few years since I'd read the books, so when I saw ROTK, I thought the same thing. Then I went back and read the story and thought better of him.

I still say that Braindead was better than the whole trilogy, though...

Aragon releases the ghosts after they help help capture the ships. The Battle of Pelennor was state of the art. They will be able to do a better battle in 5 to 10 years.

does winning 11/11 make it the greatest Oscar film ever?

I would say no.

There's a certain prestige for even being nominated for an Oscar, so I believe Ben Hur and Titanic should be considered better Oscar films--they won 11 each and were nominated for more as well.

Know what I mean?

disappointment with pelennor has nothing to do with technology. has to do with plot choices and lack of time which means less plot. hopefully the second will be alleviated by the EE.

biggest pelennor plot problems:

1. undead. not in the books. major cop out. lets them win too ez
2. the book battle had so many emotional ups and downs, so many heroic charges. they're losing, no they're winning, no they're losing no they're winning. etc. probably mostly a lack of time. it was just a much more harrowing battle. seemed over to quickly. EE may fix that though. on ups and downs note, see 4.
3. elephants (i know its spelled different). where was the ground support? firstly, when all those retreating orcs see those elephants coming to their aid, youd think they wouldve gained heart and turned around to lend a hand. at least some of them. but for the sake of argument lets ignore that. secondly and more importantly, where was the ground support (infantry) from other 'westerners'??? in the book u get the impression that saurons army had a large contingent of westerners. TT tends to reinforce that as we see hundreds and hundreds of troops accompanying the elephants ambushed by Faramir and hundreds more entering the black gate when frodo and sam are there. other references in the movie mention that its not just the orcs they should be afraid of but also the westerners. so they come with their elephants great, but where are the infantry? how many elephants were there? 15? how many men on each elephant? 20? 20 x 15 = 300 men. is that all the west sent to this battle? 300 men? where were the thousands we saw earlier? are we as an audience really supposed to be afraid of 300 men when we've just seen battles with 10s of thousands? yea the elephants are scary, but the movie was trying to make us scared of the men not the elephants (cuz there were a lot of westerners in the book), and we shouldve seen those infantry supporting the elephants like an army would. there shouldve been enough westerners there to really feel like the sheer numbers of combatants was tipping the scales in saurons favor. elephants just didnt do it.
4. arrival of ships in book was handled much better. much more dread at their arrival, much more surprise at their true contents
