What is you WAP b/g? any other 'b' devices around? I run 'g' and typically have 56Mbps, but speed drops if I am at far end of the house and signal is weak.

Take a look at the settings make sure that it is not set to lower speed.

Measure the actual Local File transfer.

10 MB file on 802.11b should take about 20-30sec. 802.11g should be 6 to 10 sec.

The Wireless cards usuaully come with a Utility that let you set the parameters.

If you do not have one log to the Brand support's site it might be available for download.

Any reference measure needs to be done while the Laptop is few feet away from the Router.

1MB=1000KB 1Byte=8bits. (b=bit B=Byte)

11Mb/sec.(small b) is 1.3MB/sec. (Capital B).

However in reality 11Mb/sec. of 802.11bconnection yields only 5-8Mb/sec.

Which is: 625KB/sec. ? 1000KB/sec.

54Mb/sec. is 6.75MB/sec.

However in reality the 54mb/sec. of the 802.11g connection is 16-20Mb/sec.

which is: 2 MB/Sec to 2.5MB/sec.

All numbers are approximation depending on the Brand and network condition some people get more some even less.

All of this have very little affect on Internet.

If you want fast LAN transfer use Wire.
