Hi Guys,

I got a new 11" Macbook Air as a going to college present. 2 weeks later I notice a small crack in my screen. I have no clue how it got there but I was wondering if you guys could suggest what I should do. The crack is small, to the point I'm wondering (hoping) its the outside plastic that is damaged and not the screen.

I live in the LA area (University of Southern California). Where should I be going for a screen repair? (I checked Apple's website and it was about 700$)

Thanks,
Reven

Go to the Apple Store, see if they will replace it. I have been hearing left and right they have been doing more off warranty work for people. Usually sold as a one-time thing 'we will do this for you this one time, it isn't something that we usually do'.

If you noticed the crack two weeks after you got the laptop, then it should still be under warranty. Go to apple store and have them take care of it. If it's out of warranty, then I don't know.

If it is an 11" Air then the warranty is still on it. The 11" Air came out in October 2010, so even if he got it the day it came out, it would still be under warranty.

The questions is whether the scratched is covered.

If you dropped it or something on it, then you will probably have to pay. But if you have just been carrying it around I would make apple fix it.

Dude, that's not a "minor" crack. It's huge!

It's still under warranty. Go to the Apple Store and get them to replace the panel.

Also, when did it happen? Seems very unusual.

This. Looks like someone poked with it something sharp.

Yeah, that looks to me like physical damage and not a manufacturing defect.

Keep in mind the 2nd screen shot was zoomed in. I will be visiting an Apple Store as soon as I can.

Unfortunately it seems the damage wasn't superficial. I'm starting to get dead pixels. The weird thing is its "spreading". At first it was like 2 pixels but now its getting larger.

EDIT: I have no idea how the crack happened. I havent been rough with my laptop and always closed the clamshell when I was done...

Thanks to all of you for the help. I was able to go to an Apple Store and after trying to pass it off as a manufacturing defect, they were able to fix it for free.
