Eleven family members died in their apartment after a mattress caught fire and got stuck in the front door as they tried to drag it out, authorities said.

I'm guessing since there was 15 of them in there, they were probably sleeping on the mattress next to the door. When it caught on fire they couldn't open the door because the mattress was blocking it.

Also it doesn't say on here, but I saw it on the news and apparently most of the people inside were kids (16 and under, the 16 year old had 2 kids of her own).

Actually... if the fire was small enough that they could pick the mattress up and get it to the front door, why the fsck didn't someone just run and grab a pot of water?

And.. I mean.. WTF? I know fires move fast, but you're telling me that only four out of fifteen people made it out of the house.. after they got the mattress stuck in the door trying to get it out?

So what did they do, run around screaming in panic as the flames eventually fully engulfed the mattress.. then started the house on fire.. Now half the living room is on fire, and they're just all running around screaming?

Are there no windows?

The only thing I can think is that it was just pure chaos with so many people, completely disorganized... and the smoke built up quickly and overpowered them....

okay...according to the Times-Picayune, the family had just moved in the night before, and were using candles because electricity hadn't been turned on yet. a candle set the mattress on fire. instead of putting it out they tried dragging it outside but it got stuck in the doorway. reason for 15 ppl is unknown, esp. since the place was only rented out to one person, but one of the survivors said 'the extended family always had lived together'.
