Gay couples can start to marry in Connecticut

NEW HAVEN, Conn. ? A judge cleared the way Wednesday for gay marriage in Connecticut, a victory for advocates stung by California's referendum that banned same-sex unions in that state.

Connecticut voters last week rejected the idea of a constitutional convention to amend the state's constitution, a major blow to opponents of same-sex marriage.

The Family Institute of Connecticut, a political action group that opposes gay marriage, condemned the high court's decision as undemocratic. Peter Wolfgang, the group's executive director, acknowledged banning gay marriage in Connecticut would be difficult but vowed not to give up.

Northeast leading the charge for freedom once again

California failed to beat back the bigots, haters and discriminators so it's the east coast that has to take the point.

Thousands are lining up at courthouses today to get their marriage licenses.

This will be all over the news.

How long before the homophobes push to overturn it? I'm guessing it's already underway.

I don't have a problem with Gay Marriage, I have a problem with states having different requirements for marriage and federal offering bonuses/penalties based on marriage status.

I believe there was something on the '08 ballot that would have opened up the door to overturning it; it got voted down... something about allowing a special group to convene to vote on constitutional amendments or something. the salient details are escaping me.

We soundly defeated a disguised attempt to overturn it in the November 4th election. It was disguised as an innocuous appearing question-do you want to open the CT Constitution up to a people's convention to review and possibly amend it. By all polls that question was headed to certain victory until a last minute series of TV ads by the state attorney general and others pointing out that the constitutional convention would be dominated by special interest groups like the Catholic Church. Unsaid but apparent was that the proposed amendments would almost certainly be so-called pro-life and anti-gay marriage. We New Englanders are basically conservative in our souls, but we have an extremely large streak of respecting privacy and leaving others alone to live their lives the way they see fit if it does not infringe our rights.

For sure there will be other attempts to overturn this-our Republican governor isn't thrilled about it, but I don't think she will make battling it any sort of a priority.

And yes, today is the first day that gay marriage licenses can actually be issued in CT.
