11,000 people apply to new Walmart in Oakland. . .

Everyone whines and bitches when they hear a WalMart is going to be built in their town... then 11,000 people apply to work there.... Hmmm.

Seriuosly. But that's pretty incredible once you think about it. Whenever you walk into a Walmart store the employees you see are all in the top 3.6% of the applicant pool. /shudders

Heh, good point. I'd hate to see the bottom 3%.

Of course maybe they hire the bottom 3% so they can pay them less.

I'm sure they turn away anyone who is too qualified though, that is, graduated from high school. . .

 But I don't think this is accurate. I am pretty sure places like Wal-Mart just randomly pick people for interviews from the pool of applicants. Basically, prior experience, education, etc. doesn't matter at all.

Uh, isn't Oakland a dump with mass unemployage?

Not really, majority of the city has turned it's image around with some areas still affected by mass ghetto's. Lots of poor blacks who could not afford the increasing rents moved on up to Vallejo, Fairfiedl, Richmond. The area surrounding Jack London square has been completely overhauled with luxury lofts and condos.

Plus the Oaklnad hills has always been a costly place to live.

Some of it is a dump, some of it has improved and is nice. I work right near Lake Merritt in downtown Oakland. There are a lot of big businesses there, and it's not bad.

I remember hearing on the news that the average hourly wage at this new store is $10.49, or something like that. That sounds a lot better than the minimum wage you'd get working at McDonalds or something.

But it may not be that much depending on the cost of living in Oakland.

you still have your "ghetto" areas, along international and telegraph but like Fmr12B said, Jack London, Oakland Hills and the Lake Merritt areas are pretty nice.

BTW: The luxury condos in Jack London are outrageously priced around $4-500k for a 1 bedroom condo.

Quite a contrast from around here, I remember a couple of years ago they were opening a supercenter nearby and they were having trouble getting enough people to work there.

I work on the other side of the lake, on Harrison St. Think a very big healthcare company. 😀
