10mbps vs 100mbps

I want to purchase a hub for a small, local lan group. Do you think that i should purchase a 10BT or a 100BT? Is there a real difference in a gaming environment? We don't really share too many files, just game.
Thanks

If you've got the money then go for the 10/100 hub. It will be better in the long run. If you don't want to spend the x-tra bucks then go 10baseT. How many posts are you looking for? 4? 6? 8? more?

we have about 12, so i will go for a 16 port it think.....
what i want to know is if the 100 is really faster for gaming or if there is not really any tangible difference
thanks

For gaming purposes, there shouldn't be much difference between the 10 or 100 BaseT. The 100 BaseT will only be faster for large file transfers.

If your users are going to be transfering moderate to large amounts of data over the network I would go with a swith. The bandwith of a hub is shared between all of the ports whereas on a switch you have the full bandwith rating dedicated between any 2 connection on the switch. Currently switched command only a small premium over hubs and can handle high data loads much better. Right now you at Buy.com you can a Netgear 16 port switch for $157.95 minus a $30 rebate good through March.

I agree with NightOwl, switch all the way. The problem with a hub in this instance will be collisions and not latency due to bandwidth. Those games are sending data down the pipe almost all the time. A switch will greatly improve network performance in a gaming enviroment.

ha... a hub and 10base t will be fine for gaming.. i personally went with a switch off my linux server all running 100base t because of my high speed cable modem (800+ kbytes per sec)... but a switch doesn't add much of a difference at all, nothing you can tell unless you ftp files and test it out very well

Right now, the switch is fairly cheap now.. a 16 port 10/100 switch cost $160, while a 16 port Hub will cost about $90.. with a switch you will not have too much wasted bandwidth like the hub.

Well you are not noticing any difference because the bottleneck here is yoru Cable modem. For inter networking stuff, 100 base T switched is SO much faster than 10bt hub. And since he is going to be connecting 10+ users its DEFINATELY better off going with a switch cuase with the hub, you will get a lot of collisions.

I notice a difference using a switch with my router/cable modem compared to a hub. My brother plays Counterstrike all the time while I download/upload from Napster. A hub slows down but not the switch.

I would say a switch, since its bandwidth is not shared between the ports. If you want to do 16 people, then you will defnitly see a difference when you do some basic things. Ever see 10 getting halved and then shared between 16 comps? It gets eaten up quick. But if you are looking for a price break, I would say at the very least go with the 100BaseT though, 16 pt switches are not much more... Check out the hot deal forum, a really good prie on one is there, put in SMC as a search within the forum... Sell the other one on egay....

12 people simultaneously on a hub will give you latency issues. Try playing a game while, four people on the network are sending files to the other 3 who aren't playing the game.
