so i just moved into my dorm room and got everything up and running. i got online through my universities connection and logged in and everything. im noticing some crazy slowdowns almost like im 1 step above dialup. the connection last year and on other comps this year is 100Mbps. i checked what mine is connecting at and it said 10.0Mbps. i called the help people and the guy told me ill never even use 10Mbps so it doesnt matter if im not connecting at 100. is this true? when i try to play BF2 its rare to find a server whose ping is under 80. CSS i dont get servers under 150

You might want to check your network setting to make sure you aren't forcing it to 10mbps. Also your university probably packetshapes it traffic, so your p2p apps and games probably won't be fast at all.

im quite new to networking stuff so excuse me if i sound like a moron.

where in network settings do i check to see if it is being forced.

when i was connected last year i would ping between 20-35 on CSS

*using windowsXP prob btw

go into device manager, then the properties of the NIC. There should be an advanced tab, and under that there should be something like Link Speed and Duplex. Hard set it to 100 Full if you like.

setting it to 1000 full isn't going to do you any good if you are on a 100Mbps network. Sounds to me like you are on a 10Mbps patch panel or something unfortunately!

I would bet it's a duplex mismatch. Plug a laptop (or 2) into that jack and see what they negoiate too (10 half, 10 full, 100 half, 100 full). Match that on yours (especially the duplex).

Call the helpdesk and ask them to check for errors on your port that might show a duplex mismatch. Should be an easy thing.

so i called them (dont have a laptop avlable) and the guy said "depending on where i am i may be on a 10Mbps router"...............i guess $2200 USD doesnt get ya fast internet too ~sigh

how much of a difference do you guys think this will make in gaming and browsing.

none. zero difference.

browsing and gaming barely use up 1 Mbs. Gaming even less.

And consider yourself lucky you have any internet at all. Its not a right, its a privelege.

Lots of college campuses are putting in network shaping tools like packeteer to manage and control bandwidth. Peer-to-peer, gaming etc are all having tight controls placed on them. Besides, I doubt if you personally have a 10mb connection direct to the Internet. More likely, it is a 10mb connection to some central switch that then routes everyone out to the Internet over a DS-3 or maybe some OC line.
