So tomorrow's the big day for me. I have to jump off the 10m diving platform. I've been dreading it for over a week now and am anxious and a little scared. Needless to say, when climbing up the ladderwell to the 10m board I get the jitters. I don't really know what the problem is considering I've done the 7.5m before without a hitch. Let's just hope all goes well. Some kid last week hit the water real hard, becamse disoriented, and proceeded to swim to the bottom of the pool (~18ft).

I guess all there really is to it is just taking that first step off the platform, 'cause after that you're going down no matter how much you resist.

Just thought I'd post and get this off my chest...maybe I can psyche myself up for it.

<---- used to jump off cliffs/rock walls at Barren River State Park as a teen. They were probably 25-30ft.

I always wanted to do that just never had the opportunity... I think I will look into finding a pool that has a 10m board!

Good luck!:)

Why dont you just jump off a few times to get the feel for it? So you can get used to the time in the air and what not. Then move on to diving and flipping and twisting and such.

I'm not a swimmer or a diver...it's just something that's required of me. I don't like the water much.

It sounds to me like you might attend the US Naval Academy. If so, you have all the respect I could possibly give to you. :D

It's tough your first time, but it's not all that bad. I used to do it all the time years ago, when our local community college opened their diving pool to the public over the summer. Now DeAnza College doesn't allow it anymore, and the International Swim Center in Santa Clara won't let people on their platforms either. Insurance rates are too high thanks to our overly litigious society.

This really is the root of the problem. I am a midshipman and will one day be an officer. As an officer, I expect my men to carry out my orders without question while negating their fears.

Tomorrow I will jump off the 10m. There's really no question whether I'm going to do it or not, the problem is learning to conquer one's fears. I'm hoping that by writing about it and talking with others, I can balance myself mentally so that I'm better prepared for it and not anxious or scared when I do it.

When I leave here in 3 years, I hope to be able to think clearly and cohesively under lots of circumstances, especially when fear sets in.

The first time is the hardest you just have to take the step and go. Be sure and dont freak out and do something weird going off. The last thing you want to happen is you do a belly flop...we are talking real bad.

I'm not saying it takes a whole lot of balls to jump off the 10m board, but you still feel the sensation. I just want to try and rid myself of it, that's all.

Nice pictures btw. Me especially likes the one of you in mid-air.

no matter how many times you jump, i don't think you'll ever rid yourself of the sensation. it wouldn't be natural to not feel the sensation.

What you have to do isn't conquer your fears. It's ignore them. You just go up there and jump and don't look back or even think about what scares you. The less you hesitate, the easier it'll be.

I could jump off feet first no problem, but there's no freaking way you could get me off a 10m platform head-first. I suck at diving though.

Ditto.

Top level high divers from 30m or so or more I think ALWAYS feel the fear and they jump all the time. They still have the belieft THAT why will do it though.

Anubis SWEET pics :D Jumping off isn't so bad but summersaulting off would be bad ass at that hight. Also big ass injury if you spin too fast or slow!

Heh... I am in ROTC Army and had to do a 3 meters blindfolded, with a rubber duck (dummy m16). That was hard enough for me (I'm not a good swimmer).

Good luck :)

10m was great. I actually had fun doing it to tell you the truth. The 7.5 meter I still dislike...but the 10m gives a nice freefalling effect.

One quick note...I had my arms across my chest and when I hit the water I ended up punching myself in the chin
