hi, im about to purchase a 10gb ipod, and im undecided on whether to get the 2g or the 3g

2g:
-slightly thicker (other dimensions same)
-slightly heavier (+ 1oz)
+comes with remote (offsets weight/size disadvantage?)
+physical scroll wheel (some ppl prefer this)

3g:
+thinner
+lighter
-no remotes
-touchpad prettier, but too sensitive

The other difference i can think of is that the 2g is USB only, while the 3g is Firewire / USB 2.0. Since I dont have neither firewire or usb2, ill have to buy either card anyways. If I had a 2g to play around with, i could probably make my decision... but I've only used a 3g so im letting you help me decide. Thanks

i say 3rd Gen. it supports on the fly playlists. i hated that the 2nd gen didn't have that.

Ditto.

For me the remote sucked on both and the clip on the remote was a JOKE.

Still too big for me. I want it really small. Too heavy also for me. Has to be less then 100g.

i'm pretty sure the 10gb gen 3 comes with a remote. just doesn't come with the docking station. that's the difference between the 10g and 15g+30g on the apple store site at least. i love my 2nd gen 10gb ipod but if i was gonna get one, i'd get the newer one. better resell value.

Err hey duder but I think you're thinking of the 1g not the 2g.

2nd Gen ipod has touchwheel -- only 1st gen has physical scrollweel. The 2g remote sucks ass. Also all the iPods are FIREWIRE native, not USB2. The 3g has USB2 support via the dock connector but the 1g and 2g just have 6-pin firewire ports.

i thought 1st gen (came in 5gb ONLY) and 2nd gen has wheels which actually moved... as opposed to the touchpad-wheel which works somewhat like the laptop thing.

so if i get a 10gb ipod (no dock), then i wouldnt be able to use USB?

so I can use firewire with ALL models and generations with ipod, but the first 2 need a special connector?

To clarify.... ONLY 1ST GEN had scroll wheels. 2nd gen did not.

It should also be noted that 2nd gen has a longer battery life (8-10 hours) than the 3rd gen (6-8).

And a question: Why don't the 2nd gens have on-the-fly playlists? I don't see why it isn't implemented....

3g because the weight/size factor win over the lack of a remote. and if you really want to, you can probably nab a remote from the ipodlounge forums... i've seen several ppl selling i think. altho, not sure if they're pricing any better than apple....

Confusion confusion... let's break this down:

1st Gen 10GB iPod: Largest/heaviest iPod. Physical scroll wheel. Uses a standard 6 pin Firewire connector.

2nd Gen 10GB iPod: Slightly smaller/lighter. Touch scroll wheel. Uses a standard 6 pin Firewire connector.

3rd Gen 10GB iPod: Smallest/lightest. Still has touch wheel. Uses iPod 2.0 firmware for extra features. Uses a proprietary connector that can be connected to either Firewire or USB; USB requires an extra cable, as only a Firewire cable is included.

Conclusion: Go for the 3rd gen, and get yourself a Firewire card; it's cheaper than an iPod USB cable.

well, the 2g 10gb has a free case. I guess ill go with the 3g 10gb, a case/pouch, and a firewire card. thanks for the clarification :bigthumb:

BUY 3RD GEN I bought a 2nd generation 20gig, and 1 month later the 3rd generations come out, and now I'm forever jealous :(

until I get a new one of course, but that won't be for another year.

Logic? You're spending a premium to get the iPod over the Nomad Zen or the like, might as well get the best of the best, and not the older version of the best.

2G ipod here - Just can't get used to the touch-wheel - almost impossible to move to the adjacent item on any menu :( Hate the looks of the 3G iPod, but would get it just for the OTG Playlist (except, I believe it gets reset every time you connect to the computer - haha, 3G iPod owners are losers  )

my friend brought up perhaps the best point of all... 3g = newer = better resale

with all the supposed new "ipod" killers coming out, i wonder what will happen to the pricing . the closest thing seems to be the new ZEN NX; althought i love its design its still just a tad too big and heavy

3rd Generation battery life is about 4 hours shorter than the previous generations. It lasts about 8 hours per charge now, without using the backlight for anything. Even so, I really love my 15gb iPod
