1080p TV Recommendation

I currently have a 720p 42" Samsung DLP, and I'm looking to upgrade to a bigger 1080p TV after getting a PS3. Used mostly for games, but some movies. Looking for something around 50-52" and I want to spend around $1500 if do-able.

Anyone have any recommendations about models I should consider?

Thanks!

Friend was just looking for the exact same thing. After looking around it came down to Samsung 650 or the Panasonic 85U.

He went with the 650.

I got a Panasonic TC-P50S1 for around $1550 shipped from buy.com I am very happy with it

it is their newest gen (released this month) Neo PDP

If you can swing the extra $250...

SammySamsung LN52A630 Yes, I own it...)

NO glare baby.

The imminent Panasonic P50G10 should hit that price fairly quickly. Way less power consumption than previous plasmas, plus picture you have to go to the top of the LCD food chain to equal...

edit: oops, does only the lesser S line have lower power?

Multiple people seemed to recommend plasmas - but there's usually lots of ambient light in the room, multiple windows with blinds but not very good blinds. Is this going to be a problem for me?

The Samsung 52A630 is the best choice IMO then, since it is 1080p, matte panel, 120Hz and looks great.

The 52A550 will also fit the bill excellently as it is also matte, can be found under 1500 but it is only 60Hz (still looks great, I have a 40A550 in my bedroom)

Cool, I think I would rather spend a bit less than I wanted, than a bit more, and it seems like all I'm giving up by getting the 550 over the 630 is the 120hz, which doesn't seem like it will matter as much to me as I'm primarily using it for games. Also I don't know how I feel about the 'Touch of Color', I think I would rather have more plain, haha.

Thanks for the tip on the matte finish, it sounds like that will do better in my room.

It's 1399$ on Newegg right now...

Your concerns are valid. In a bright room it is better to go with LCD. If you had a dark room, plasmas in general would be the better choice. Of course if you have no budget limitations top-end models from either technology would work very well.

Since you will be playing games off of the PS3 I would most definitely get one that has 120Hz. You'll notice blur when your characters are moving about quickly--120Hz will reduce that quite a bit.

Thumbs up to the matte option: with lots of light in the room a glare-type LCD would be very distracting.

24fps for movies is a big plus though. AMP sucks, but 5:5 pulldown is great.

If you live near a Fry's, they have the 52A630 for $1500.
