I doubt someone could see the difference on screens that small.
Then again, visit a store and ask them to show you, take a 1080p video trailer with you on a stick or something in case they don't have anything handy.

1080p video looks horrible on my 1440p monitor let alone 4k. Streamed video which looks ok on my 24 inch 1080p looks horrible ony the 27 inch 1440p right next to it. I was going to buy a 4k tv for around 600 but decided to get the cheaper 1080p one to avoid issues with upscaling (its purely for watching streamed 1080p video from twitch). If your monitor is not doing any major processing when it upscales the video it will look just as bad. In regards to gaming, no they will not look the same. 1080 to 1080 means pixel to pixel, where as with the 4k its getting upscaled and may make it look equally horrible, although I must admit I have not tested this at 4k. 4k is such a gimmick on a gaming laptop, desktops cant even deal with it properly yet. I would personally make whatever sacrifices you need to get a 1080p screen.

1080p looks as good as native on my 1440p screen. 1680x1050 looks fine as well. Don't bother with the drivel spread online.

I can't agree from the perspective of my previous 1600p screen. 1080p had noticeable blur while 1050p was unusably bad.

I prefer 1080p native and downscaling from 4K whenever possible. It's more robust & flexible so you have a lot more options.

It should be much cleaner with an integer multiple of dimensions and a preserved aspect ratio.

4k should scale perfectly to 1080p. Its 1/4 the res, so 4 pixels to 1. 1440p to 1080 = 1.77 pixels to 1. I believe this the reason 3840x2160 res was chosen as the UHD standard, due to its perfect divisibility with 1080p. Since everyone buying 4k TVs will still be watching 1080p for next few years, it had to look and scale well.. or else who would buy a 4k TV if it looked like crap on HD?
