"1080P" monitors

I hear people saying "I hooked it up to my Xbox360 it looks awesome" etc etc. I thought you had to have HDMI or something to do this? Or is there a DVI out on the 360/PS3?

I guess the main thing I'm interested in is "does 1080P mean I can do what this monitor can do?" I'd love to hook up my Gamecube to be able to play FzeroGX widescreen.
 
I don't think that monitor is true 1080p.

The title might be some marketing trickery. It says 1080p supported, but the recommended resolution is 1680 x 1050.

The true 1080p res I've seen are at 1920 x 1080.


"1080p supported" could mean that it could handle devices that put out 1080p, but the monitor scales it down to 1680 x 1050.


Basically saying the monitor is 1080p and the recommended res is 1680 x 1050 is a contradiction. Kinda like how cheap headphones say it's 5.1 stereo headphones.
 
Can your GameCube even output 1080p?

Either way, buying a 20.1" or 22" monitor is NOT going to let you play games at 1080p. The native res of those monitors is 1680x1050, not 1920x1200.

I cant speak for GameCube or PS3, but the best resolution you'll get from those monitors using an Xbox360 is 1360x768.
 
Well, for GameCube and Wii, you only have component connections at the most. In reality, the neither the GameCube or Wii output higher then 480p resolution. The same is true for PS2, XBox, and even DVD's.

However, the people connecting their XBox360's that use a 1080p display are using the VGA connection that the XBox360 through the adapter. With the VGA, the XBox360 can output 1080p resolution. The "Elite" version also has HDMI which can output 1080p. The same goes for the PS3.

That said, I do see a decent image improvement simply using the component cables for the GameCube and Wii, even on my normal TV's. However, there is no real difference between looking at it on my normal TV's using component verses on my HDTV's using component (aside from the widescreen differences).

Just so you know, in my house I have a Sharp 46" LC46D92U LCD TV, a Panasonic 42" TH-42PX60U plasma TV, a Sony 22" Trinitron CRT TV, and a Zenith 19" CRT TV....

1680 x 1050 is basicly inbetween 720p and 1080p. For a monitor that size you really dont want 1080p anyway if you are going to use it for anything else because everything on it would be way to small (text, internet surfing etc). If you can afford a little bigger monitor with 1080p that would be even better though.
 
Gamecube's support 480p max, so you'll get no benefit from that monitor. Actually, the graphics will probably look worse because the monitor will have to scale the gamecube's 480p graphics to the native resolution of that lcd.
 
You can also run games from the Xbox 360 at 1920x1080 with the VGA cable. That's how I have mine hooked up to my 24" Dell. That way you get some small black bars on the top and bottom...an indication of true 1080p output (the dell is a 1920x1200 native, resulting in 120 pixels not being used, 60 on the top and 60 on the bottom).

Oh, and to Fallen Kell...you can run a few games from the original Xbox in 720P (MVP is the only game I specifically did it with, so I know it's available).

Actually the original XBOX will output HD 720p and 1080i. And many upconverting DVD players will also output 1080i and 720p.

With an xbox 360, you can also output 1080p over component cables. The difference at 1080p between component, vga, and hdmi on a 360 is very small.

You can do 1080p via component with a PS3 as well; You just need the PS2 Component Cables.

The only restriction is that the display accepts 1080p over component. Some do not.

Check the monitor in my sig. Its awesome for the PC and Xbox360. I have both hooked up to it and am typing on it now. I can't say that its any better or worse then the big screen TV in the other room but to my eyes it looks good with the VGA cable.

Well were not talking about laptops that you sit 12 inches from. And plus he'll be sitting quite far away with a game pad kicking back with his feet up. Thats quite a distance. Probably be even to small for game menus even if the monitor isn't big enough and has to high a res.

 
You guys are tooooooooooooootally missing what I was trying to get at. I guess I wasn't clear.

Basically, I want to know what it is about that Haans-G display in the electronics that allows me to plug in the component cables of my Wii to play on that TV. What do they call the technology that allows this? The cable they include does not come with a chip inside it to change the image any (those cost $100 ish and they wouldn't give you that free), it just connects it to the vga port somehow. What should I look for in other displays that would allow me to do this same thing that this one allows?
 
The easiest thing to look for is an input that matches the output you want. You want component? Get component in. If there's a monitor that does it differently like the Hanns-G, you're going to have to do more research. The Hanns-G has a DVI-I input (that means it can take both digital and analog signals through the same connector) They then include a funky cable that feeds the analog component input to the DVI-I connector on the monitor and logic on the monitor recognizes the signal and spits it onto the panel.

The Dell 2407wfp on the other hand has a butt load of connectors on the back and allows you to have all them connected at the same time and use a button to switch between them. That's a whole lot better than having to unplug my PC's DVI cable to plug in my Wii any time I want to play.

What the Hanns-G has listed in it's specs (if you look at THEIR product page) is component input via the DVI connector. On top of that its "HD ready, supports up to 1080P" only means it can accept those signals, doesn't mean it displays them un-munged.

SHORT ANSWER: Find a monitor that supports whatever input signal you want to feed it.
