Hi all, I am wondering if you can help.

I am looking for a 1080p monitor with a preferably IPS display but with low input lag and not too much ghosting. It will be my number one display for gaming on PC and my PS3 (eventually PS4 maybe) so it should have a HDMI input. It must be 1080p because I often have the display duplicated to a secondary 1080p display elsewhere.

I'd be happy for it to be a TN display if it had a broad colour range, but I'm not that bothered by 120Hz+. It would be nice if it had a displayport but that's not a requirement.

I'm sure there are lots of such monitors about, but I'm struggling to be honest!

I have an LG Flatron IPS234 with 14ms gray to gray. It's better, immensely better than my 5ms gray to gray TN panel Samsung SyncMaster 943. There is no ghosting (the TN has it) and the image is smoother.

I don't know why that is. 14ms sounds catastrophically bad to me, but the screen is awesome, and it was pretty cheap, considering. Besides, the newer version has 5ms gray to gray for the same price. Don't know how much better they are, but they must be even better.

tftcentral.co.uk do a lot of reviews of mostly IPS monitors, I would check that for comparisons of latency and blur and colour quality. Obviously you'll get no where near as good as TN for overall latency (it will be about 14x that of a modern high end TN panel!) but you'll get your extra colour gamut.

Hi everyone, thanks very much for the responses.

I was looking at a Dell Ultrasharp, but I'm not sure I quite trust it for gaming.

I really do appreciate all the suggestions, and I'll have a thorough look at anything suggested when I'm back from work.

Cheers all!

The Dell u2312hm is a 23'' IPS monitor with, according to TFTCentral's tests, almost 0 input lag.

It is limited to 60Hz refresh rate, and it lacks HDMI in opting for DVI,VGA, and DP. However, it can be driven by single-link DVI, so a simple inexpensive HDMI->Single-link DVI cable would be just find for driving it with your PS3.

Probably because those numbers are mostly bunk and taken under the absolute best circumstances. So sure the display may be able to do 5ms at some point but overall it could be much slower.

Tempted by the Ultrasharp U2414H at the moment, http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/reviews/dell_u2414h.htm as it has HDMI inputs and can take a sound bar and can daisy chain?

Also, I'm not being stupid, but MHL can take normal HDMi inputs, right?

The U2414H is 269 right now on the Dell site

Also maybe I missed it but you never did mention what size you were looking for, looks like everyone assumed 24 inch.

Yeah, 23 inches+ would be fine. It would be nice to have a larger monitor, but then I'd want a higher resolution than 1080p which doesnt work as nicely when duplicated feeds and wouldn't sit besides my current monitors... so 24 inches is about right.

I bought a Eizo Fs2333, the 'best IPS monitor for gaming' [considering reviews], a couple days ago.
It will be delivered on monday, so personal opinion only next week.

Has 2 hdmi's input's [and a dvi and d-sub/vga].

It is a bit expensive compared to cheapest 23/24 IPS monitors, but I think worth's the extra for my use: gaming and some amateur work on photography/video.
Has very low input lag, fastest gray to gray for an IPS, and good colour accuracy [if we don't need wide colour gamut/adobe RGB].

Any reviews :)

I received my new monitor yesterday..

When turned on I just changed to 'User 1' profile - default mode when new is 'eco' [with low brightness] - set brightness @50 and then checked for dead pixels and 'IPS Glow' or light bleeding, by viewing 5 or 6 full screen 'pictures' of only one colour [black, white, yellow, green, blue,...].

There is no dead/stuck pixels on my monitor, nor light bledding.

IPS Glow I can notice in some positions where is expected glow appears - viewing by side with black pictures/darker images.

I need further tests to have a more secure opinion about IPS glow, yesterday it was like this:
1- Monitor don't have dead/stuck pixels nor light bledding
2- There isn't IPS glow if viewing in a front/normal position
3- I saw a 1080p trailer of Avatar and 5 min of Life of Pi [those on the magic island] in high bitrate 1080p, and I was amazed with the colors/quality.
4- Let's go testing this sh*t in Battlefield 4

About anti-glare.. this Eizo has a semi glossy coating, wich is the lightest matte coating.
From what i've read they use a light matte coatting because with a good/heavy matte coating it's not possible to have good color reproduction.

The screen is matte but if viewing from some angles [and only with black pictures], I notice just a little reflection of my white all-in-one printer/scanner that was really really close to the monitor.
Nothing to worry about, since it's only from some positions, with black images, and that's not the usually place where the all-in-one is.
I think the matte coating of the Acer [TN] monitor I had was a bit better but the colors.. It's a whole world of diffence.

On gaming -I played 2 hours in Bf4 multiplayer - I think it's perfect as a 60hz monitor can be.
Great colors and no lag, so for gaming better then this only if you play mainly shooter's and want 120hz [and have cpu/gpu capable of 120fps..].
As a note, I didn't play on 120hz monitors yet, so I have no idea the difference a higher refresh rate can make.

But I have a poor base to compare.
I had a TN Acer 24' 1080p 5ms that broke a few days ago and this last day's I've been using my good old Samsung 226BW [TN, 22', 1050p, 2ms] that was my monitor before the 24' Acer.

It's not fair compare this Eizo with the old monitors I had. Different leagues, completely.
Acer only was a bit more matte/less reflections but the difference is not great since with Eizo fs2333 only in specific situations i can see some reflections - and this situations aren't in a 'normal use'.

As a side note:
IPS Glow is different from 'light bleed' and it's expected it occur in any IPS monitor, at least on those that doesn't cost more then one grand.
It's a technology fault only really minimized in pro monitors.

So far I'm very happy with my purchase.
I will probably get a calibrator, to reach 100% sRGB space. I want more accuracy for my hobby in photography. But even without calibration it's a great improvement on colors I can see in my photos.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

This Eizo cost me 304€ on Amazon.de +15€ in postage/shipping to my country.
That's 120/130€ more than the cheapest 23/24' IPS [from LG] and 70-90€ to the cheapest 24' IPS from Dell.
It's a bit expensive for a 23' IPS..but I think worth the extra. IPS may suffer from IPS Glow like I said, so I only consider brands with good quality/support, that is Dell or Eizo - Eizo is a 'pro' label, not a mainstream like LG/Asus,... Compared to [cheapest] Dell this monitor is better for gaming - lower input lag and faster response time.

Near where I live I couldn't find stores with many IPS monitors to compare, but even if I could normally the monitors in stores doesn't have good settings and they suffer from different conditions in therms of light/environment and input signal compared to a normal home use.
So, was risky to put the trigger on this monitor based only in reviews/opinions but I think it worth. And to be honest, buying a monitor [like a tv] is always risky since even if you look at one in a store, each monitor [like a cpu, for example], is unique and in your home the lighting conditions and use [your pc, games, etc] is different from what you see in a store.

P.S. 1:
Congrats if you read all this wall of text... and sorry for some mistakes in english. :)
As you already notice I'm not a native english speaker. Far from it, I'm a very bad english speaker and writer..

P.S. 2.
Later I can look better on IPS glow.

Your English was perfect, thanks for the review! It's a bit out of my price range, but I'm tempted to find it in my budget somewhere. 5 year warranty is good as I'd be a bit afraid with an unknown brand,

Decisions, decisions.

Eizo is a uknown brand compared to LG, Asus or, in U.S., Dell but it's a know brand in Pro monitors.
They only have 3 'cheap'/consumer monitors, on the foris [gaming] 'family', their main market is pro segment, from color/design segment to industry or medical applications.

You can contact Eizo regional support to your country if you have any doubts about their products/support or where to find their products closest to you.

I didn't contact them, but if I have any kind of problem in this first days Amazon will change my monitor without hassles.

But if its out of your price range, or you think you can give a try in a different monitor, I suggest you to get a Dell monitor. Or maybe HP, depending of HP support in your country and a lot of reviews of the monitor itself.
Like I said before IPS monitors can [or.. will] suffer from IPS glow, so IMHO is a good ideia to stick in a know brand of monitors, and not on 'mainstream brands' like LG or Asus.

I was facing the same decision as you a few months back and went with the Dell P2414H. It is an outstanding IPS gaming monitor.
