1080p HDTV necessary?

I am sorta looking for a big tv (50-60 in.) in the next 6 months or so. I don't have HD service from my cable company, and don't watch a lot of TV shows. But I do love watching movies, and I have a nice sound system already, so a big TV would compliment it well.

I read some reviews and it seems the Sony KDS-60A2000 is one of the best available for the money (found it online for $2250). Is it worth spending extra on a 1080p tv if I mainly watch DVDs (won't be re-buying all of mine in HD-DVD format either), but may get high-def service in the future (probably at least 3 or 4 years from now when I have money; still in college)?

Thanks. Any other tv recommendations are welcome as well.
