I don't know if this is the right forum, but it seems more appropriate than putting it in off-topic. I got some component cables for my PS2, and hooking it up to my 4:3 big screen TV, when I play things in 1080i, it always goes to 16:9 with the black bars even when I choose 4:3 specifically in the game. 480p works fine in 4:3. So does 1080i only work in widescreen or is it just my game (Gran Turismo 4)?

I would assume you need to set your TV to 4:3

Ah nevermind, i just realized you are setting it to 1080i on your PS2.

1080i is 1920x1080, so yeah, it's gonna be widescreen.

I think its the game, and how its telling the TV to handle the signal. 4:3 might only actually be an option for 480i/p (but they still let you change that option even when running 1080i).

For the most part, most 1080i content is 16:9, but technically 1080i just refers to the vertical resolution.

Sometimes when watching some stuff in HD, my TV actually says its getting a 1920x1080 signal, but its only 4:3 with black boxes on the sides. A couple of times its done 1280x720, and is wider than 4:3, but doesn't fill the whole screen. For the most part, though, 1080i/p, and 720p are 16:9.

1080i is widescreen by nature.

1080i is an abbreviation for 1920x1080 interlaced. If you devide 1920 by 16 and multiply the result by 9, it comes out to 1080 even.
