Question 1080 Ti power requirement

So I was all ready to install my "new" 1080 ti into one of my P510 work stations and realized that the MSI model I have is 2 8 in power connector model not 6+8. The P510 has a 650w power supply but only a 6+8 PCIe power connectors. Replacing the power supply is not an option. On paper the slot+6+8 should give 300w and the 1080 ti recommends 600w power supply and draws 250w max. Can I use an 6 to 8 pin power adapter? I don't want to risk damaging the card since 1080 ti's are still going for a lot on ebay.

I won't tell you to run it out of spec, but I'd certainly have no problem trying it. The P510 uses the same dual drop cable for the 650W and 850W PSUs, and the 650W platinum supply would definitely have the grunt for a 1080 Ti. I'd use the stock 6 pin and just jumper the other two pins myself though. That's all the stock cable does on the 6+2 end anyway and then you avoid another set of contacts.
