1080 on a 1440 monitor

I'm getting back into PC gaming after a long break. I bought the parts listed below. Last time I was into PC games, resolution was determined by your performance. Now it seems it's either 1080 or 1440.

From what I understand I should be able to play some games at 1440. If I end up having to play 1080, how much better/worse is running 1080 on a 1440, compared to running 1080 on a 1080?

CPU: Intel Core i5-6500 3.2GHz Quad-Core Processor
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-B150M-D3H Micro ATX LGA1151 Motherboard
Memory: Kingston HyperX Fury Black 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-2133 Memory
Storage: Crucial BX100 250GB 2.5" Solid State Drive
Video Card: XFX Radeon R9 390 8GB Double Dissipation Video Card
Case: Corsair 200R ATX Mid Tower Case
Power Supply: Corsair CX 600W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply

You should run all games at 1440p and lower settings to compensate.

Running 1080p on a 1440p monitor looks blockier than running 1080p on a 1080p monitor. That's partly due to scaling and partly due to the fact that 1440p monitors are typically larger.

Sounds like a 1440 display should fit my computer for gaming then?

My current monitor is a Dell 2005fpw (21") that I bought 12 years ago. That's like 95 in computer years.

Dell 2005FPWs are 20 inches, with 1680x1050 resolution. If you upgraded to a 24" 1080P monitor, it would seem huge to you, and be dirt cheap these days. I see decent ones on sale all the time for $119-129.

Personally I went from a 27" 1920x1200 16:10 to a 34" 3440x1440 21:9 curved monitor and I absolutely love it. Yes text is smaller when typing word documents but I can live with it to have 3 of them side by side on my screen. As for gaming the ones that I play already support my native resolution but they will still allow you to step down the resolution so that is always an option.

With a single 390 I would just get a decent 1080p monitor personally. 1440p performance is going to suck and you'll have to lower details a hell of a lot to get it playable.

BRB going home and turning down settings on my 290.

Seriously though, it's plenty for a good but not great experience at 3440x1440. Granted it helps that I'm mainly playing Warframe and that game doesn't have high enough settings, but the only game that really chugged was Attila and that's because it's the sort of game I'm willing to trade a lot of framerate for IQ in.

1080p looks like crap on a 1440p,i figured i give it a try just now as i just got my QNIX QX2710 and it crossed my mind.Use it maybe as a last ditch effort i guess?

I am running a 1440 32" BenQ and love it. I haven't tested latency, though its said to be good for all but the twitchiest games. scaling is the same as a 24" 1080 monitor, so fonts are fine. I just have lots of space to spread things out and multitask. I got a refurb from the factory site for $343 delivered with a pile of cables. No vertical lines, no bad pixels.
