1080 on a 1440 display

I’m going to build a new gaming rig this winter but I’m thinking of getting a new display now (my current 1080 display is starting to show signs of age). It’s going to be a “midrange” gaming rig (my high end gaming days ended with the birth of my daughter).

I want to buy a 27” 1440 display but the GPU’s in my price range (RX480 & GTX1060) are iffy at 1440. So my thought is to get the 1440 display and play what I can play at 1440 and what I can’t, I’ll play at 1080. My question is how does a 1080 game look on a 1440 monitor? Does it look as good on 1440 as it does on a native 1080 monitor?

if it's just a mid range PC, I wouldn't expect max settings. My current GTX970 plays games at acceptable settings at 1440p IMO. Sure, it will go down over time, but I'm already at High / Ultra depending on the game. So drop down to Medium or so before dropping the resolution.

That said, both resolutions are 16:9... 1080p will look worse but I think more so because it's a 27" monitor. I don't think it will look *bad*.

I own an R9 390 with a 1440 monitor.

Depending on the game, I might go 1080 for the extra frames.

In my experience, with my monitor ( ASUS PB278 ), it does a good job at scaling - you don't get that blurry/muddy look you might expect - you just lose some sharpness.

If you are uber-picky, I'm not the guy to ask.

If you aren't uber-picky, I think you'd be happy ( assuming the 1440p monitor you get scaler is reasonable.)

One of my 780's I had in SLI just took a dump...So I've been playing on (1) 780 @ 1440p....Currently playing batman arkham night...most settings at medium, which I thought would suck, but it looks great.

I cant comment on scaling down to 1080p, but if you have to play some games on medium/high settings, I don't think you'll be disappointed.

I thought that this thread was about playing at 1440 on a 1080P display. Because that's what I'm doing right now, with AMD's VSR feature. I think it's great!

Why do you "want" to buy a 1440p monitor for your "gaming PC" when you know your gaming experience would be inferior?
