1080/60hz Overwatch, should I upgrade to 960 or 970?

I have an i7-3770k and aGTX 750 Ti 2GB now. It's playing Overwatch at 1080/Ultra around 45-50fps. My monitor is a Dell 24" 1080 at 60hz. The GTX 960 will for sure bring me to about 75fps while the 970 will bring me to 127fps according to this site:

http://www.gamersnexus.net/game-bench/2200-overwatch-gpu-benchmark-and-fps-tests

Since my monitor is limited to 60hz, is there any point in getting the 970? I dont' plan on playing any other games, especially nothing graphcis intensive.

I'd wait and see the GTX 1070 reviews on June 10th, and skip the GTX 970, it's end of life and pretty much discontinued.

great advice, just looked into the 1070 and it seems pretty good, I'll just handle some low resolutions until 1070 reviews come out. thnaks!

Overclock your i7 when you buy your new video card so you get some more oomph out of it.

Blizzard games are usually CPU heavy. Overwatch runs great on all the GPU's I've seen. I'm guessing even low end Polaris 10 will handle it excellent.

Don't buy anything now, wait for the next cards to launch. Worst case you can always buy a used 980/980 TI/ 390(x) and have great performance with it.

Your 3770k will work great for it. I'm using that plus a 290 and game at Ultra @ 2560x1600 and don't drop under 60 FPS.

This is specifically the NVidia forum and the OP was asking of which two NVidia cards should he get.

This is not the place to recommend AMD.

i don't have a 750Ti, but from experience i would take an educated guess and say, you run the risk of hardware lags during situations with a lot of models onscreen - so, the worst time possible. with FPSs, you really want to never run into frame drops.

you could also look at the R9 380, it's in a very good place now, with low prices and great power.

@Esquared both the cards he is asking about are EOL. Yes it is the Nvidia forum but Nvidia isn't coming out with new cards in that price range $200-300.

Would saying don't buy either without offering alternatives be more constructive?

1070 is only releasing as Founder edition @ $499 in the next month

960 and 970 are both good, but they are different kinds of animals; one starts from $160, the other $270. what the OP wants, really depends on how much he wants to spend.

personally, i own a 770 and i'm very happy, i think the sweet spot is the **7 series, or "one step down from the top tier". i include things like 980 and 980Ti in the same range, so, looking backwards, 970, 770, 670, 570 (56Ti actually), 470, and 8800GTS before that.

but, it's not the best use of a budget. even my card hardly ever spins up; granted, i tend to disable most FX options, like godrays or motion blur, but what really makes the difference is the 1920x1080 resolution - you just don't need that much power to push it.

so, a 960 is a totally fine solution. and he'll get Shadowplay which is amazing. If he wants to buy a 970, it's because he wants peace of mind when running the occasional Witcher 3 or whatnot, but he sure doesnt need a 970 to play overwatch.

You could always pick up a used GTX 970 from someone who's upgrading to a 1080. *cough*

Eh, it looks good enough to me at medium-high (no dips, ever) that I'm happy sticking with my 750ti until low-TDP 14nm comes out.

It's not a photorealistic game, after all.

After playing it for a day at 1080 High settings, I have no complaints about the performance. Will stick with the 750 Ti for now. Thanks for the responses.

As of right now Overwatch has a big problem with input lag when the video card is maxed out. I would suggest using the monitor based fps cap in the settings which will cap 10 fps above your refresh rate while lowering the settings so the video card isn't maxed out which means no ultra for a 750ti.

I suggest waiting for sure before purchasing a GPU at this time. If rumors are true the 1070 is going to provide amazing fps per dollar. Even if you buy last gen 970 it will most likely see a large discount when the new cards land.

New cards from both sides dropping in June. Wait for them to come and read the reviews, see which performs best in your price range
