I'm having a hard time deciding between which card to purchase. For once I don't have to make a decision like this from a purely budgetary concern, but I don't want to spend extra bucks for no good reason. I'm curious just to hear other people's arguments for or against the 1080 card.

Also another question I have is about 1440p. What's the experience like in 1440p for doing things like watching movies, web browsing, etc.? Basically non-gaming functions.

I have a GTX 1070 paired with the Dell S2716DGR 1440p 144Hz G-Sync monitor. With the aid of G-Sync the GTX 1070 seems to give acceptable performance too me at least. If needed I don't mind dropping a setting or two to get higher fps.

27" 1440p seems to be comparable to 24" 1080p as far as text sizing, etc. too me at least. Web browsing I just use the zoom feature in the browser set to 125% so it's more full screen.

1440p gaming is somewhat taxing at times. I guess it would really depend on what games you want to play, what refresh rate your monitor has, and if it has G-Sync support or not.

This review has both the 1070 and 1080 with a larger variety of games tested which should give a decent idea of expected fps.

I'm kind of the I'd rather spend the xtra money on a monitor than a gpu I'd probably replace in a year or so anyways. I wasn't really looking for a 1440p monitor with G-Sync at the time but found a good deal on it and figured it would be somewhat of a safety cushion for the 1440p gaming hit.

Good luck on your adventure!

i'm running a GTX 970 @ 1440p and it suits me fine. I'm not big on FPS games so could care less for 60+fps. I also always turn off AA at this resolution as IMHO it's not needed (i'm old school and remember when AA was marketed for 640x480 & 8000x600 resolutions!) Therefore im sure a 1070 is more than enough for current games @ 1440p.

970gtx @1440p/144hz here. Enjoying it quite a bit (just got the monitor recently). Some older games will cap out at 144hz, newer games tend to either need lower settings, or just accept that they won't be over 60, but the 970 is good for most games @1440p @60fps. One thing to do if you go this route is definitely get a gsync/freesync for whatever your flavor is, it's pretty friggin amazing. Other thing is go through all your games and play with the AA settings since you probably won't need them as high, can push you up another 10-30fps depending on the game, helps pull the pressure off the card unless you get something beefier (1080, titan, whatever).

1070 can likely just crank everything to max for whatever's out right now, though.

Will you actually be playing games? For non-gaming functions, like those you list, the two GPUs are identical.

The 1080 is about 20-25% faster than the 1070 in my testing. That's a pretty big difference at 1440p, but I'd actually suggest you consider investing in a 1440p G-Sync monitor, which will make a 1070 feel far better than a 1080 would on a standard 1440p monitor.

Rise Of The Tomb Raider drops below 60fps at 1440p with VXAO enabled using a GTX 1080. Even with my factory overclocked card :(

Scary how demanding modern games can be!

There were a few games that would slow down on my 980 Ti (pretty much equal in performance to a 1070). I'm probably in the minority here, but in my opinion, if you want to dial up all the eye candy regardless of the game you're playing I'd go with the 1080 at 1440p.

I am trying to Choose between Nvidia GTX 1080 Founders or a Zotec 1070 8GB
(using with 6700K processor)
I am not building for gaming. Using for:
*2-3 monitors (1) 4k (2) 1080P.
* Blue Iris video surveillance system 6-8 cameras (4 HD)
*1080p video editing and occasional 4K Video editing..
(Pro-sumer, youtube or travel vids using a $100 level software like:
Corel CyberLink Pinnacle Adobe Nero or Sony)

Could I run BOTH the surveillance and editing programs at the same time?
I am a newb on editing 4k and multi monitor
setups.
I will probably run 1 of the of the 1080P monitors from the MB?
Should I consider a 2 cards? If I used a the Zotec 1070 what would I want to use for 2nd?
One more question Is a LG 27EA83R-D 27" LED IPS Monitor 2560 x 1440 a good monitor for my use? Or Should I be looking for a 4K monitor soon?
Thanks for any advice.
