1050 vs 1060

I know these cards are in completely different leagues but anyway...

I just bought an MSI Laptop with a 1060 (MSI GS43VR). Runs great -- very happy so far. However, the new Dell XPS 15 has a 1050 now and would cost roughly the same -- plus have a 15.6" instead of 14" and overall better build quality I'm sure.

All I play are Overwatch and SC2 -- I'm thinking the 1050 would be perfectly fine for those at 1080p. Medium settings would be fine.

I'm just thinking the 1060 is wasted (I can play any more demanding games on my desktop), and I'm missing out on an XPS quality laptop with a larger screen -- for the same size and portability.

If the XPS was a 1050TI I don't even think I'd make this thread - I'd have already returned the MSI. I am a little concerned about the 1050 lack of power though.

Are you sure these are the only games you will play? How long do you intend to keep this laptop? OW looks fine at reduced settings, you're right, but for future games the performance difference could mean the difference between playable and a stutter-fest.

It could be, I basically only play Blizzard games with friends. I suppose I don't want to have the bare minimum GPU overall -- plus the Dell would end up being a few hundred more configured the same.

Well, don't let me scare monger you. Blizzard games are almost always esports focused and have low requirements. It'll be a number of years before the 1050 has issues with future Blizzard games I am sure (Overwatch is 4 years newer than the GTX 650 and that card can run it, for example). But as you said, the cards are not in the same league at all so if you want to keep this for many years you may run into an issue where the (sometimes close to double) performance difference between the GPUs matters.

Going to see if Microcenter has any on display. I think the 4k Dell with 90 whr battery would be a much better laptop overall. It looks like Overwatch could even run 4k at medium settings on the 1050. Unless Warcraft 4 years somehow doesn't run on the 1050 I think I'd be good.

If Crysis 5 comes out and requires a 1080, I'll just upgrade my desktop. But right now the more I think about it, the whole point of the GS43VR is to be a portable 1060 machine, which is great... but I won't be using the 1060. I'll be playing esports games and watching movies on planes.

Go for the 1050ti then. I mean at 14' inch display its not like you are going to be using up the 1060, there will be plenty of performance untapped.

The XPS doesn't come with a TI (wish it did), only the Dell 7000 Gaming has that, but its much larger and nearly seven pounds. We'll see, I need to check out the Dell in person.
