Hi all,
I get my livin' money through a fellowship. They don't do withholding, so I'm supposed to send in the 1040ES.

I forgot to do this for the 1st quarter (April 15). Can I just send that amount in along with my June 15 amount w/o penalty?

Or, is it too late to avoid the penalty? i.e. whether I send in the April 15 chunk now or next april, I'll still get charged a penalty, so might as well hold on to my money.

how about asking an accountant... or better yet.. the IRS?

atot is easier/more accessible.

and less likely to be accurate.

ok fine.. you want an 'easier' answer?

Don't worry about it.... pay your stuff in June, and the IRS won't care
You won't be audited, you won't go to prison, those are all just rumors.

Remember, when you write your check, send it in ancient egyptian hieroglyphs. most IRS employees were archeologists, and they'll get a kick out of it.

eh some people here are actually knowledgeable about tax stuff. If nothing else, there's a 'tax help' thread every year. I just figured that on this whole forum of people, there'd be a couple who are self-employed, on fellowship, or whatever and have no withholding as a result. Thus to avoid penalty, they too would have to send in quarterly 1040ES forms, and they may/may not have some experience to share.

Also I could whatever I want to with the 1040ES and if I were audited, it wouldn't make a difference. ES only affects whether or not you pay an end-of-year penalty for being a cheapass and not giving uncle sam his share.

edit: also yes, I realize that an anonymous forum isn't a guaranteed 100% kind of thing. But if I think I can tell the real answers from the bullshit... well, it's my grave not yours.

Send it in with the June 15 payment.
Seperate payment.

for that amount and the fact that you only missed on quarter; they should not care.

If it becomes a habit, then the IRS will get flustered.
