Money is not of an object here.
Right now I have a 15" Dell LCD, and have no plans of upgrading to a larger one. (College and upcoming moves prevents this) But My system specs are below, and Im borrowing a 6600GT for now, and looking to get a card of my own very soon. Is a 6800GT or 7800 GT overkill? I want to play the games with all the settings turned all the way up with reasonable framerates and not having to worry about upgrading for the next year and a half or so. what are your thoughts?

Consider a Radeon X800. Its got very similar performane if not better than a 6800NU but runs about $150. I would say a 6800 GT or 800XL would definatly be able to do what you need it to do.

A 7800 GTX is WAY overkill for this.

This is a toughie, If money is not a problem, then get the fastest card you can find (who cares about resolution, you'll get more FPS). I would get a 7800GT/GTX for better future proofing, or get two of them ( either 2 7800GT's, or 2 7800 GTX's) for 16XAA which would really help at 1024x768. If money is really not a factor, then get a better monitor :p

See, the problem is that a card may be overkill now, but you'll be glad you bough it later. For now, a radeon x800 for $150 will play anything maxed out at 1024 no problem, but in a year it might not be so great. A 7800gt, while overkill for now, it may be what you'll be wishing for later on. So, if you're willing to wait, a 7800gt would be a good choice. Otherwise, even a 6800gt would be good for another year, I figure.

Additionally, a 7800 variant may be overkill now, but if he upgrades to a new monitor later, he'll need a new card as well too :)
