100mbit network performance.

I rewired my network because the wall plugs were all wired badly(too long without keeping the pairs twisted) because the network would only run at 10mbit, and i wanted to move my switch to a central location in the house. Well i tested the network transfer speed between 2 computers. I used a webserver on one computer so i could see the speed of the transfer. It was about 6MB/sec. Is this normal/good for a 100mbit lan connection? I know the theoretical speed is more like double that.

Could this be caused by the computers not being able to access/write data that fast? Also, is there a (EDIT: free) program out there meant to test network performance?

thanks

That's a tad slow but not totally out of scope. If you really did all your wiring and crimping then that could certainly hold you back. SiSoft Sandra has a decent LAN throughput benchmark. Doubt it comes on the free version though. QCheck is free I believe however.

Well I am not even using the inwall cabling yet. The 6MB/sec was using a switch and brandnew cat5/cat5e cables to connect the computers. I didnt make any of them.

Ok i ran qcheck. It limits it to 1MB as the max data size so how accurate can it be? Well It got ~77Mb/s is that normal?

Ok i ran the tests more, and going from a 3com nic to a realtek nic i get about 94Mb/sec, but going from a realtek to a 3com, i only get 77Mb/sec. I take it this is because of the cheap realtek correct?

welp, in my realtek properties there was a setting called 'optimal performance' it was set to disabled, so i enabled it and i get 94mb/s both ways now. thanks for everything.
