100lb = 10hp?

Scouzer

Lifer
I've heard this before.

Thoughts?

Don't rape me, I don't know! 😛

Unclear post: I was referring to shaving 100lb off a car's weight gains '10 hp' and adding 100lb loses '10hp'

That sounds overly optimistic

Edit: Obviously you're not talking about an actual change in horsepower, but rather an equivalent gain in performance... I don't think you could simplify it that much.

Go down the 1/4 mile in a civic, then put a 100lb sandbag in the back.

Then do the same thing with a F-350 powerstroke.

I don't know how there can be a set weight of lbs = hp

HP = power = work/time

lb = weight = measure of gravitational pull

or if you're thinking lb-ft, that's a unit of force (about an axis)

The rule of thumb I've always heard is that every 100 lbs lighter you make the car you pick up 0.1 seconds in the 1/4 mile.

No. It's possible that at a certain period that relationship would work, but lower weight does nothing for top speed.

That's what I've heard too. No way lighter weight would increase horsepower, it would just change the HP:Weight ratio slightly.
