What're my choices here. I only know of the WD and IBM drives.

WD1200JB 120GB 8MB is £280
WD1000JB 100GB 8MB is £210
WD1200BB 120GB 2MB is £255
WD1000BB 100GB 2MB is £190

IBM 120GXP 120GB is £270

Are some WD drives still made by IBM? I remember they used to be...

Do they do a 7200rpm drive? I thought it was only 5400rpm?

Sorry I should have specified that I want a *fast* drive. No SCSI though 😛

Maxtor's 100GB+ drives are teh D540X range, which are 5400RPM. The 7200RPM D740X range only go up to 80GB.

Given your choices, the WD1200JB drive with 8MB cache is the fastest.

<< Those prices are still a bit steep... I got my WD 1000BB for only $119 US. >>

things seem more expensive here in the UK than in the US! 🙁

I know you can get the WD1200JB for about 270 or so on googlegear.com, although I have a feeling that's not useful if you're in the UK.

I've been finding 1200JB drives in 1200BB Retail boxes at Best Buy! I just bought two and got two free DVD players (basic Magnovox model that cost $130 each) which makes it a sweet deal IMO. The DVD players have SPDIF outputs, SV, etc. and make great gifts! I thought the deal was lukewarm until I saw the JB (8MB) cache drives in each retail box!

Cheers!

Even if Maxtor had a 7200 RPM 100GB + drive, DON'T GET IT. IBM and Western Digital have diagnostic utilities that can scan and repair defective sectors by communicating directly with the drive's controller, while Maxtor, Seagate, Quantum and all the other crap use regular software that will lockup and restart the PC when it encounters most problems. IBM or Western Digital are the only options in my opinion!

I refuse to buy IBM. I have had two 75GXPs and one 60GXP die on me. I like WD and Maxtor. And no, I'm not biased, I currently have the following in the room I'm in:

(5) 60GB Maxtors
(1) 45GB IBM
(1) 40GB IBM
(3) 100GB WDs
