No convincing necessary. Just point out the 1000 in 1000 Base-SX. It's not 10/100/1000 Base-SX. It's 1000 Base-SX.

There's no 100 Base-FX in there. The clock is hard set as well as the signaling/encoding being completely different.

It would just be easier to say they are two different network technologies. One is 802.3z and the other 802.3u (or something like that, I don't recall the exact ones for gige and fast e on fiber). It would be like plugging an OC3 into FDDI and expecting it to work.
