OK, perhaps not a hot deal per se, but free is free, and this is awfully convenient.

Everybody's favorite search site, Google, has added a feature that stores thousands of print catalogs (JC Crew, JC Pennys, Spiegel, etc., etc.) and makes them instantly available. Go to http://catalogs.google.com.

Some nice features include the incredible speed (as with everything on Google, it is lightning fast), the degree to which you can zoom in, and the ability to do text searches across multiple catalogs. Let's say you are looking for a particular type of designer sunglasses. Combine your online Internet search with a search of printed catalogs. Google's proprietary format seems to be much faster than Adobe PDF files.

The site is still in Beta, but it seems to be fully operational. Google rocks!

Tech writer John Dvorak has speculated that this type of online cataloging might be a perfect solution for print magazines, as the paid advertisements are still there on the page. I.e., no need for pop-up/pop-under ads that get in the reader's way.
