1000BT over Crossover?

I have a database server upgrade coming up next week, and I want to know if I can use a crossover cable to transfer data at gigabit speeds to do the big transfer. I need to figure this out ASAP, as I am ordering a gigabit 3com card with the new server and need to know if I should order one for the older one as well, the order is going out in a couple hours. We don't yet have gigabit switches, and probably won't for a long time, so that isn't an option. I'm simply getting the gigabit card with the server because it's not that much more $$, and it'll be there for future use that way.

I can make a cable out of CAT5e to any specs, if I need a certain minimum length or anything, or I have a high quality Cicso crossover cable with ferrite blocks on it at home that may work well.

So, will it work?

I'd definitely not recommend making a cable for gigabit unless you're REALLY good at it. It's not worth the risk of problems due to a poor connection or lack of twists. Just pick up a commercial crossover cable somewhere.

On that note. I've never heard of a gigabit crossover cable, but see no reason it shouldn't work. Ethernet is Ethernet and crossover cables are pretty fundemental part of the spec.

Garion has a point about 1000 Base-T being EXTEMELY picky. So much so that I refuse to use it.

Hey, G. did you check out that link? pretty weird.

Thanks for the help guys. I hadn't thought about it being really picky, but I'm sure it will be. I'll check the cable from Cisco against the specs that spidey posted to see if it'll work or not. If it does, I'm golden, if not, I may just go buy one. I may also try to make a couple, just because I have made a couple dozen in the last week, so I can probably do a good one, we have some nice connectors and a good crimper too.

It doesn't have to be a huge long one or anything either, I'm just going to directly connect two servers to keep the load off of the switch.

uhm, not sure where U can buy one like Spidey posted... U'll prolly end up having to make it.

Also, make sure that cable you make is more than 2.5 meters in length.

Actually, for the tme invested, you could just run the copy through the switch. In most cases, it will have little or no effect on the network performance, should have little or no effect on the server (for other users), and the new server isn't online, so the users won't see any effect there either.

Just plug into your switch and do it.
