The R50e Linuxator linked is not a bad deal. Unfortunately the R-series are relatively heavy at over 6lbs and are very thick (~1.5" IIRC).

For $1K you're not going to get discrete graphics that are worth a damn so I wouldn't even bother; take the better battery life and minimal performance impact of an integrated GPU (just make sure its GMA900).

The HP dv1000 is Sonoma based, thus GMA900 GPU, and is very reasonably priced. If you're a student you can get an additional discount.
Another choice might be a Dell 600m, as they have coupons all the time, but I personally am not impressed w/the build quality (esp the keyboard). If you have the money, go for a Latitude (like D510 or D610).

I did realise this info, but the weight isn't really bad, plus it's Made of very thick ABS plastic not like Compaq or dell , you get a 1 year free warranty and an extra 512mb of ram, I from experiences, have seen dells come and go but IBM once they come they aren't leaving for a long period of time.

This is very true. The ABS plastic is thick making the build quality comparable to a T-series. I just reviewed an R52 and the build quality was good, just thick & heavy.
