$1000 notebook with a BRIGHT display?

hey guys, I finally got my Thinkpad R40. It's pretty nice and all, but GAHHHH THAT SCREEN IS AWFUL!! It's worse than my old TP570 from 1999!

I don't think I'm going to be able to live with this. So what are some models I could look at that have a pentium-M and a good screen for about $1000?

I've heard that a whole bunch of manufacturers have models with birght displays now called things like XBRITE or CRYSTALVIEW or a bunch of other names. Hopefully I can find an older model with one of these screens though so I can get a better bargain.

go to hpshopping and you can get either the compaqV2000 or HP dv1000 for under 100 with student discount and basic stuff
but i gotta say, both those lappy have a bad screen IMO

Check out some Gateway Centrino models @ BBY. there's a few that have a "brightview" or whatever screen and run about $1000-$1200 on sale (and instant rebate sales too!)

I thought the specs on the gateway 3520GZ at BBuy were decent for $1099 no rebate, so I picked one up. The first one had a defective battery slot which they discovered before I left the store in their free system check. And the second one had a bad AC connector and would power off the laptop on the slighest movement of the cord. Best Buy reproduced the problem in a couple minutes when I took it back for a refund. It looks good on paper, but I think the QC is lacking..

be careful

XBRITE and CRYSTALVIEW just put a reflective coating on the screen. Some users find it very annoying as on darker screens you can see a reflection of yourself (like on an old CRT).

Currently the brightest notebooks I have found are the uber expensive Toshiba Quisimo series (600 nits) and the much more affordable sharp actius AL27 (400 nits) ($1399 direct from sharp). Not sure on the specs of your R40 but I'm guessing the screen is less than 185 nits.
