Well, I bought my PCI-E x800 xl today and hopefully next week I should buy everything else.

I need recommendations on a case, psu, mobo, ram, hard drive, dvd burner, speakers, monitor and keyboard/mouse. I feel bad asking such a question, as it isn't fair to you guys to do my research for me.

I already have some stuff in mind but I'm very curious as to what you guys think is good. It's $1000 CANADIAN, ok, so try not to give me something in USD. Oh, and the cheaper the better. If it affects anything, the computer will be used for gaming, some light photoshoping, light 3d rendering/modelling and some web development.

That's about $822 for those interested while I conjure up a rig.

BTW, any overclocking?

See what you can do @ RB Computing. They have very competitive CDN prices, will put the machine together for you, and have given me nothing but excellent business on the many times I've dealt with them.

AMD 3000+ 939
DFI Ultra-D
1GB (2x512MB) Corsair Value Slect Cas 2.5
Seagate 120GB SATA w. NCQ
Antec Super LANBOY
Fortron Blue Storm
NEC ND-3520
Logitech Z-3e 2.1

That's $740 USD. Don't know about monitor though.

Edit - Changed PSU to Fortron Blue Storm.

Thanks for your responses...cpu, mobo, ram, hard drive and burner look good. I don't like the looks of the super lanboy, I saw it in a store and wasnt very impressed. For the psu, blue storms are hard to find in canada (for me anyway...)Would an OCZ Modstream work well? I have read reviews on that and was impressed. Speakers look nice, but I was looking for something with 5.1. Anyone else have something to reccommend?

Lol, with only that much money, you're gonna be hard pressed for a nice set of 5.1's. I'd rather have a set of 2.1 good sounding speakers than a crappy 5.1 set. An OCZ Modstream 450w would be great.

Do you want a CRT or an LCD?

It's going to be tough to fit a decent 5.1 system into your budget. Maybe a basic logitech set for about $50US would be about the best you could fit in your budget.

The Seasonic seems really nice, but I don't think my parents want me to buy online (They're afraid of fraud and stuff.) So I'd rather get something locally. As far as i know they're only available from stores in B.C. Modstream it is! Its only $100 too, is that a good price? For speakers, I saw a set of Logitech x-530's for about the same price as those z-3e's. Are the x-530's any good?

EDIT: I would definitely like an lcd but I've heard bad things about ghosting while gaming. If someone could clear that up it would be appreciated. (Like what response time is decent these days etc...)

It's kind of tough for us to recommend stuff if you're going to be going out locally and picking stuff up. If we don't know what's available or what the prices are it's kind of difficult.

I'd take a set of z-3s over x-530s. If you need 5.1 for sure, the x-530s are decent but a slightly better 2.1 set is what I would pick.

An OCZ modstream is a good PSU. What's the wattage on it before we say if it's worth $100?

Newegg says that the 450w modstream had an output of: +3.3V@28A, +5V@45A, +12V@26A, -5V@0.8A, -12V@1A, +5VSB@2.5A

Would that be sufficient for this system:

AMD Athlon 64 3000+ ($189)

DFI Lanparty Ultra-D NF4 ($189)

Unknown Case (Want recommendations)

Corsair Value RAM

ATI Radeon x800 xl

1 hard drive

1 optical drive

I meant if it was 450 watts, 400watts, etc.

$100 is good for a 450watt one, go for it :)

EDIT: yes, sufficient

EDIT2: antec makes nice cases. SLK-3000b for example. Add another 120mm fan in front to blow over your hard drive and you're in business.
Is that the kind of look you were going for, or are you looking for something more flashy?

Vid Card: X800XL Already bought

You are not going to get stuff locally for anywhere near the same price... I would highly reccomend going through FrontierPC for as much of it as you can.

The SLK3000-B is very nice.

Really? The 3000+ is more expensive at frontierpc, the mobo isnt available there, the ram is nearly $100 more expensive, the hdd is 15 bucks more, the modstream aint avaliable there, the burner is about $20 more, floppy and speakers are $10 more. My place has better prices ;)

Oh, I started quoting before I saw the FrontierPC part so I didn't look there.

As a rule of thumb in the US, going to a retail store to get parts is going to devastate your budget. If there's an awesome local store for you, that's great.

The 3000-B is kinda okay, but how about the cavalier 3. They're about the same price, but I like the cavalier's looks a little better. Any opinions on that?

Case is where I think you have the most leeway to get whatever you want. Make sure it's from a decent company and has good airflow. Beyond that, it's pretty much wide open for personal preference if you ask me.

Cavalier 3 looks like a fine choice.
