I hope this will lead to huge fines for any company found guilty of hiring illegal aliens.
And mass exodus/deportations.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- In an intensifying effort to battle illegal immigration, the U.S. government sent notices to 1,000 companies on Wednesday alerting them that auditors will be examining their hiring records.

The employers, ranging from small businesses to major enterprises, will be subject to inspections by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to determine whether or not they are hiring illegal workers. The agency declined to release the names of any of the companies being audited.

"The inspections will touch on employers of all sizes and in every state in the nation, with an emphasis on businesses related to critical infrastructure and key resources," ICE public affairs spokeswoman Gillian Christensen said in a written statement.

The audits are focused on industries considered vital to U.S. domestic security, including agriculture, banking, energy, information technology, health care and transportation systems.

This move brings the the total of so-called "I-9 audits" to more than 2,300 so far this year, topping last year's total of 2,196 audits.

The audit surge is an effort to crack down on employers who hire illegal immigrants, an issue Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano began focusing on in April 2009, according to Christensen.

"As part of that strategy, we radically stepped up the use of I-9 audits," she said. "Basically they were barely doing them."

The number of I-9 audits rose from 500 in fiscal year 2008 to 1,444 in 2009. Last year's audits resulted in the criminal arrest of 196 employers, and 119 convictions. To top of page

Good. It's about fucking time the government went after the one thing that keeps drawing the illegals here...the companies who hire them.

Not only should there be severe financial penalties for hiring illegals, there should be criminal penalties as well.

This country DOES need a well-run, properly setup "guest worker program" to provide the cheap labor needed by our farmers, but should include a requirement that the worker return to his/her country every year for X number of months after the season is through. No more "itinerant illegal immigrant workers" traveling the country in search of work, but rather, they work through an agency that has to do background checks to weed out the criminals, hires them for a specific job, (could be a farm labor contractor who would keep them busy in different types of ag work for the season) and when the season is over, they return home. As an incentive to return, as much as 50% of their wages would be withheld in an interest bearing account that they can access only when they return to their native country.
We had the "Bracero program" a few decades ago that had a similar "wage withholding" feature, but it was poorly managed and many of those farm workers lost their money.

He has been tough on illegal immigration, much tougher than Republicans.

http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2163236

All while championing a path to amnesty for them.

Quite a contradiction, unless you accept that these actions are playing to the crowd. An acceptable amount of collateral damage he's willing to accept while at the same time ensuring that we have an open border.

Until the border is sealed, and illegals cannot cross, no action will be enough.

They're giving them a warning for a reason. If they wanted to bust the illegal aliens they'd show up unannounced. Obama is making a clear statement to the business community that the worst offenders will pay the price. He's going straight to the source instead of messing around with all the little guys who won't ever stop coming back if he doesn't shut down their employers. Instead of busting the heroin addicts, he's going after the drug dealers and forcing the addicts to go without in which case there is no reason for them to hang around.

I like it.

Anyone want to tell me why Obama doesn't deserve a fist-bump for this?

I'm sure Fox news and Rush will either figure out a way to ignore it or blame Obama for creating the problem in the first place or even for somehow making matters worse. After all, he's really a Kenyan and not even American!

of course not you partisan hack

I've been clear on immigration for a very long time. I hated Bush for it, I hated McCain for it, I'll continue to hate Obama for it. Open border is a death knell for our country, I don't care who supports it.

The man knows to play the PR stunt today in his effort to pass amnesty and open borders tomorrow. That is if he ever gets around to it. Fact is it's hard to get support in Congress for it and many people such as myself as quite hostile towards it and frankly Obama doesn't need to pass it.

He wins if nothing is done on immigration, because the border is open until someone seals it. Making life hard on them won't change the fact that they're already here in the tens of millions. Picking a few off here and there, even in the thousands, makes absolutely no difference. It's NOTHING in comparison to the actual numbers out there.

I await a candidate who swears to seal the border, they'll win pretty big points with me no matter who they are but go on... please tell me about this 'partisan' hack you claim to see.

Can we cross-reference this list against the list of companies receiving waivers for Obamacare? I doubt we'll see any common names.

A business owner has to be pretty stupid to be busted for this. Just don't use e verify and wait 3-6 mo until i9 comes back invalid, fire, hire "new person" under new ID.. Until e verify is standard there is always a huge gap where cheap labor can be had.

Congress is as useless as my appendix which was removed 40 years ago and some of them have been in office for just as long. They can bitch and strike poses all they want, but they have about as much credibility as tits on a boar. About the same as your partisan nonsense.

I don't know about death knell - it's just like free trade in that it's subjecting Americans to global labor arbitrage but local as in what they can't off shore. Some people like it just fine.

That's fine for unskilled labor, but illegals have been moving into skilled labor jobs such as construction. It also doesn't prevent Obama from making a surprise visit with a few dozen immigration officers and IRS agents. There's only so much plausible denial possible when you have to face the judge repeatedly.

They can make all the visits they want. As long as you have no confirmation of illegal status (i9 returned as invalid) you're not in violation. You're not an immigration official. And you can't discriminate just because they don't speak English.

You don't need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows. Arizona's state law insisting employers use e verify has made it through the supreme court and two bills are now in the house of representatives to nationalize the requirement. Other states are already passing their own bills and the public is demanding those jobs. With no other jobs in sight and the economy in ruins the issue simply will not die any time this decade.

Obama's decision to have ICE do all these audits only makes sense in this context. If congress fails to act he can blame them and still avoid any nasty backlash from the immigrant community. If congress does act he can claim with some credibility he supported taking more action all along. What he cannot do without loosing credibility is to sidestep the issue and as long as he keeps the spotlight on the issue it will continue to gain momentum.

President deports himself.

What a joke. Just quit paying for anchor baby welfare.

$5,000.00 fine for every employee, plus they have to pay taxes for every illegal employee X2. So are these illegals paying income tax and unemployment insurance, and SSN? It not make the employer pay on demand.

ICE does not have the manpower to do such a thing. We cant even keep track of the people who come here on a legal visa! Even if you could locate all the Illegals, then what next?

Just start at the meat packing plants and check all the farm hands. The Meat packing plants have been abusing all their employees from day 1. It is the most abusive industry.

Then check every cleaning company, and every Hotel in every large city. What companies do is they hire cleaning companies to do cleaning, then the cleaning company hires the illegals. So make all the companies that hire the cleaning companies guilty by association.

WTF, they sent notices of future plans? They should just show up unannounced so these businesses can't hide the evidence.

Tennessee has had a law on the books for a couple of years now fining employers $50,000 per illegal laborer. Total number of fined companies: 0.

That state also forbids contracting companies doing business with the state to not use illegal labor. I know these people are not working under guest worker visas... because there are a ton of unemployed construction workers in my area.

There are just too many loopholes and hoops to jump through to actually make any of these laws actually work.

Every illegal we allow to stay in our country is a slap in the face to all the people who went through hell to migrate here legally. Our immigration policy is pretty shitty, but that doesn't excuse those who violate the law. Oh well no one will cave either way so we'll have this problem forever.

I say that because they retain their foreign identity, and there is a segregation between their retained culture and the American public. We're alienating them and they're sticking together. There is no union between them and us, no melting pot to be found.

It is a growing divide from a growing minority population that will attain majority population in multiple southwest states. They'll literally own and control the region.

Yet many people feel they do not belong in our border. If that's true, we'd have to move the border - cause we aren't moving them. It's a culture war.
