$1000 credit at best buy, only for dvd recorder, good til 7/06. what to get?

i had bought the philips something-or-other 3 years ago and the psp for it. after taking it to best buy for the no disc errors enough times, they decided to junk it and give me a $1,000 credit towards a new dvd recorder (only one dvd recorder, and i don't get the difference in cash or store credit. basically, i should get the most expensive one there).

however, the most expensive one i wanted was either a sony or lg dual-layer every-format dvdr/vcr for only $350 (there was a panasonic with a tivo, but i'm already with tivos and wasn't interested). what i want is an hd-dvd or blu-ray dvd recorder, whenever they come out. but will they be out by summer? is there anything worth waiting for over the next 9 months? should i just get the sony (or the lg) mega-unit? all advice welcomed, thanks.

i know you're trying to be helpful, but i feel like you're not reading my post. it's credit towards one dvd recorder for up to $1,000. i don't want one with a tivo.
