$1000 Bill - Where to take to find out it's worth?

My wife's friend received a $1000 bill as a gift from an older neighbor she takes care of. He said to take it to a pawn shop or something to sell it or see what it's worth. That doesn't sound like a good idea to me lol. I figure there's gotta be something like a coin collector or antique place to get it appraised. Is this the correct route or is there something more specific she should look for to get it looked at? The closest major city we live by is Fresno, but I guess she could take it to somewhere in the bay if it's a legit place to get it looked at. Thanks.

Yeah, take it to a coin dealer for sure....NOT a pawn shop.

From AI:

A $1000 bill is worth far more than its face value, typically starting around $2,000 for a common, circulated note and increasing to tens of thousands of dollars for those in pristine condition or with rare serial numbers. While still legal tender, their value is driven by their rarity as a collector's item, not their usability for everyday transactions.

Thanks. I'm looking into what criteria to use to locate a legit dealer and one thing that keeps popping up in my search is the American Numismatic Association and they have a directory so I'll tell her to check that out.

A few auctions from ebay on some clean looking ones as well...

I searched for "$1000 bill cleveland". Course it picks up commemorative stuff too.

That's pretty crazy!

According to a couple sites, the serial number has a coolness score of 97% lol Doesn't translate to what people would actually pay but cool I guess...

If you want to have fun lookup what Canadian Tire money is selling for. I have a decent amount of it that I keep as a relic but I regret not collecting even more of it back when it was still available.

It's actually kinda funny that Canadian Tire money has kept up with inflation better than actual money.

Forgot to update this thread. The wife's friend found someone from the American Numismatic Association search who's based out of Carmel. They met and she was able to get $2k for the bill. Apparently she was given a $500 bill as well that she was able to get $1k for from the guy she met. Not too shabby!
