I'm on a 1000-1200 dollar budget, but i'm not quite sure what to get to get the most for my money. I know you guyz have plenty of suggestions, let em rip. BTW this is for the computer only, not peripherals.

For the proc I'd go with a AMD A64 3000+ Venice, will overclock nicely to compete with the more expensive procs w/out water cooling. Just buy a decent pure copper hsf.
For the mobo I'd go with a decent Abit, Asus, or MSI board w/ pci-e. Also do some research on your mobo, make sure that its easy to work on and easy to overclock the proc.
Vid card, 7800gt comes to mind, one card for the simple fact that when you finally need to upgrade you can buy another and its all good. 🙂
Ram, at least a gig of pc3200 or better. Name brand is a must.
Hard drives, go with SCSI, find some used somewhere, I'd reccomend the FS/T forum. SATA is alright, I'd rather have SCSI though.
Optical drives are up to you, dvd burner is probably the best bet. Speed and brand name are up to you.
If I missed anything, let me know.

I'd go with the above setup, except with SATA instead of SCSI. SCSI is a shade faster, but it costs a mint. A SATA RAID array is plenty fast, if you ask me.

I notice many of you are suggesting the 3000+ venice, but what about the AMD Athlon 64 3500+ Venice 1GHz FSB Socket 939 Processor or 3700+? the 3000+ is about 140 bucks but the 3500+is only 60 dollars more... or should i invest more in a mobo to oc and not worry about the processor?
agreed, not to mention dell's are usually pretty damn quiet and you don't have to build it or anything, just plug it in and do your stuffOriginally posted by: Ameesh
buy it off of dell outlet, you can get a real bargain.
