Heres the deal.. .The computer wont post, im getting one long beep and three short. According to ASUS this means a ram problem. Ok, so i figure this old mushkin ram is on its last leg so why not upgrade to 2 gigs. So i bought some G.skill which came today and guess what? Same beeps. I tried resetting bios over and over with no luck so i decided to take everything out of the case and try just the mobo, processor and one stick of ram. Same beeps. I really have no idea whats the problem!? Can anyone give me some advice? The computer is a pen 4 640, asus p5wd2-e premium, i have two sets of ram mushkin 2x512mb pc2-4200 and g.skill 2x1gig pc2-6400(bought today), evga 7800GT, antec tpII 550w

Edit - I forgot to say this but i did manage to get the motherboard to boot twice. Both times were with the mushkin ram, one time was a single stick and the other time it was two sticks on the same channel. Each time it booted i entered bios, saved my settings and it never posted again. Dont know why it decided to boot those select few times but it wont do it anymore no matter what config the ram is in.

Update - With just the proc, no ram or videocard(i get the same beeps with or without a videocard) i get a long beep and two short. I googled it and i found "A video error has occurred and the Bios cannot initialise the video screen to display any additional information." Im positive the videocard works though, ive tested it on another system. With no videocard and one stick of ram i get the orginal one long and three short beeps

No idea why it would boot those two times and not others. Randomness in an error suggests it could be the PSU, or a power problem in general. Never had bust ram so i cant be 100% sure, but im under the impression if rams broke, then its broke, it wont boot somtimes and not others.

2.0-2.1v, I was reading the forums and i came across a few people saying they had to order some cheap ram to get their mobo to boot so they could enter bios and put the correct memory timings and voltage inorder to boot with the ram they were intially using. Could this be my problem? I dont want to spend anymore money unless i HAVE to. I've already went wayyyy over my budget and replaced almost the entire computer when i could have done a complete upgrade to conroe. :(

Cant borrow any but my last ram(Mushkin HP2-4200 ran at 1.8v) and it didnt fix the problem but i had more luck with it than my new G.Skill ram.

hrm...it's wierd that it would boot up and then not?

Anyways, have you tested the ram in another system? If the mushkin is set for 1.8 it should be fine. What bios are you using?

sounds like your motherboard if you ask me. Test your ram in another system. Re-seat the processesor, and do a voltage test on your PSU if you have a tester (they are like $6).

Thats what confused me. I had one stick of the mushkin in the first dimm and the motherboard booted up fine, i entered bios and changed everything to the correct settings, saved them and it didnt post on the restart. I tried over and over again with the same ram config and it wouldnt boot(i thought maybe i slipped up and put the wrong timings so i reset cmos and it still wouldnt boot again with the same ram config). I probally tried 30 times after that, trying different ram configs and out of no where it decided to boot with two sticks in dimm a. So i went into bios again, didnt change anything this time since it booted and was working, i chose the "discard changes and restart". It didnt post this time, nothing had changed but it didnt post. Thats when i decided it had to be the mushkin ram was bad, so i bought this new g.skill and now i cant get it to post no matter what. I should have kept the mushkin ram but i sold it already(the guy who bought it got a steal since it was sold as is and he said it works fine). Anyways, my point being the ram was fine all along. Im not sure what version the bios is but i know its not the most current one.

This is the second motherboard, i had similar problems with my last asus p5sd2-x(not just ram problems it was funky all around). It was a wacky board though, the chipset sucked so i bought this p5wd2-e since it has the nice 975x chipset but i cant get it to boot! About the PSU, that and the processor or the only things i havent replaced so it could be the PSU. Fortunately, i have another in my closet that i can try. Ill bust it out and post back.

This is really starting to piss me off, What could possibly be wrong!?

Edit - I think i may have found the problem, one of the cpu pins looks bent. Would this cause the motherboard to not post?
