100% Stumped here... can't even think of what else to try.

I've been trying for a solid month to fix my shuttle XPC.

Came home from work one day and it just wouldn't boot.

The system had been 100% stable for 2 years. The system gets NO response when I hit the power button. However, when I remove the video card the system turns on. So my first thought was obviously to replace the video card. I did this, and I get the exact same results. The system didn't work with the card in, but turned on with the card out.

After this, I was on the phone with Shuttle tech support for almost an hourand while troubleshooting we tested almost every part by itself.

The most odd thing about the situation is that the processor fan turns on when I hit the switch on the power supply, (but not with the video card in.) and the rest of the system turns on when I hit the power button. (again, not with the video card in.)

The hard drive and memory worked in another system. The system has the same result with the optical drive unplugged.

The conclusion the Shuttle tech drew was that it was either the motherboard or power supply. I took the wager of it being the MoBo (thinking there might have been a short causing the CPU fan to come on, but not allowing anything else to happen.)

The MoBo arrived, I installed it, and no dice. So I sent it back to Shuttle and ordered the PSU instead. Again, no dice. Also, the PSU they sent was 450w, vs the 300w that came standard with it, so I think that rules out a matter of the draw being too high.

The ONLY part which I haven't tried (and don't have a spare system to do so) is the processor. Now, I GUESS it could be the processor, but I don't see how that could be the cause of the fan turning on, and the system not working with the video card in. I mean, is that possible??

The ONLY item I haven't tried a replacement for or had the same results with the part out is the processor.

I guess if that COULD be it, can anyone in the Cincy area test it for me in another system? (I think it's Socket 939)

Try a PCI video card maybe and see if it boots? Can be found for $20 - $30 or so. Also, perhaps the motherboard AND the video card slot on the motherboard (AGP I assume on a 939 system) got fried in a power surge.

It's actually PCI express. I had both the replacement video card and replacement motherboard at the same time, and using both of them gave the same results.

The system WAS on a surge protector, (not just a 'power strip') and no other devices are behaving erratically. The system gets the same results in other outlets or with everything else unplugged from said surge protector, so I don't think it's a problem with the wiring in my apartment. (although it is old and probably crap.)

Maybe I'll check FS/FT and see if I can get a cheap processor (or even just a "loaner") and find out for certain if that's the problem. If it's not that, I'm done with the damn thing.
