About 100 American and British aircraft took part in an attack on Iraq's major western air defence installation yesterday in the biggest single operation over the country for four years.

The raid appeared to be a prelude to the type of special forces operations that would have to begin weeks before a possible American-led war. It was launched two days before a war summit between President George W Bush and Tony Blair in America.

The Prime Minister promised that Britain would be alongside the Americans "when the shooting starts".

The raid seemed designed to destroy air defences to allow easy access for special forces helicopters to fly into Iraq via Jordan or Saudi Arabia to hunt down Scud missiles before a possible war within the next few months.

linkage

Looks like the coalition is coming together. Britain and Kuwait are on board now, who else is next?

Why haven't CNN or any of the other major U.S. news channels picked up on this yet? Something is definitly in the works. Bush is on a hair trigar and can't wait to pull it. Lots of our forces were just sent over and its been very hush, hush.

I was wondering the same thing.

Also, to the creator of the thread, your link requires a membership (which is free, I think, but I'm lazy).

Interestingly enough, the British press often has a lot of stories that the American press, for whatever reason, disregards.

they've regrouped and rebuilt over the last 10yrs. While they are no match for a US coalition, they do have substantial air defenses, unlike Afghanistan

Hand over Saddam and let __________ rule with their biological and possibly nuclear plants still in place?

Hmm....not looking like a good idea.

Allies Bomb Iraqi Military Facility
WASHINGTON (AP) - Allied aircraft bombed a military facility southwest of Baghdad Thursday after Iraqi forces attacked one of their patrols in the no-fly zone, defense officials said.

It was the 35th airstrike reported this year by the U.S. and British coalition put together to patrol zones in the north and south of Iraq following the Persian Gulf War ( news - web sites).
It says nothing about the number of aircraft used and isn't nearly as in depth as the Telegraph article. Can anyone find anything to confirm the Telegraph article?

I agree - we need to yank Saddam out of power and make sure that all chemical weapons and nukes have been neutralized.

Just handing over Saddam is not enough. We have to eliminate the threat.

Iraq Says Western Jets Attack Civilian Targets
BAGHDAD, Iraq (Reuters) - Iraq said U.S. and British warplanes attacked civilian targets in Anbar province, west of the capital Baghdad, Thursday but reported no casualties.

In Washington, the U.S. military said its warplanes attacked an air defense target in a "no-fly" zone in southern Iraq in the latest in an escalating series of exchanges.

FROM the BBC
Iraqi air defence site attacked

The Iraqi defence minister has tried to unite Arab opinion

Nearly 100 US and UK planes are reported to have taken part in an attack on a major Iraqi defence facility.
The operation, which targeted the main air defence command centre for western Iraq, is part of the enforcement of the air-exclusion zones over the country, allied military sources said.

However, BBC defence correspondent Andrew Gilligan says it seems to have been much larger than normal.

The raid comes as President George W. Bush steps up his campaign to oust Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein.

CNN would rather show propaganda of anti-US Palestinian demonstrations than any worthy news. Internationally, CNN is a running joke for people who actually care about news coverage. It's the "USA Today" of news channels, perfect for the daily American diet of BS. Of course, it doesn't have anything to do with the fact that Time-Warner's CEO was Gerald Levin, or CNN's CEO is Walter Isaacson, both of Jewish heritage).

All we need now is Tariq saying they were all civilians and then we will know for sure that no civilians were injured...The good thing about a country like Iraq is you can usually believe the opposite of what they say.

Agreed. If you want real news coverage, I recommend FOX News Channel if anything starts going down here soon.

Why are you guys complaining about the news coverage? Don't you know Worldcom, slavery reparations and the 2 boys that murdered their father are much more important than 100 planes hitting Iraq??? C'mon get your priorities straight!;)

Yah, Tariq is a big liar. I like watching him do interviews. I think Saddam himself is just behind the camera man holding up the queue cards for him, and making slit your throat gestures at the same itme.

My father is the lead engineer for an energy corporation out of New Mexico- been E-mailing him back and forth today and he says war is definitly imminent. He said oil prices went up 2 weeks ago with no explanation whatsoever, and I heard at that same time that our government had ordered all oil reserves to capacity. Rush Limbaugh is saying this morning that the war has pretty much already started with the 100+ jet attack yesterday.

Impacting...

thats a lot of aircraft. the bombing itself isn't an event except for the size of it.
