imonarock: *All* Cat-5 cables are "gigabit ready". That's sort of like putting a "PS2 compatible" sticker on a DVD :)

No, all cat-5 cables are fast ethernet ready. The cat-5 spec only covers signalling up to 300 MHz. To get Gig-ready, you need cat-5e. Most cat-5 is gig capable, but it is not rated at Gig speeds.

You should all try making cables! It's not too hard. It's pretty cheap too. of course, having a few thousand feet of cable in a spool isn't fun to carry around.

you don't even need to buy a crimper if your cheap; a small flathead screwdriver a hammer and a little patience works just as well :)

That price is pretty bad, I can get Leviton Cat 5e here in town for 9¢ a foot! Maybe you should call around to your local networking places?

That's a great price Jugernot, but some of us live in small towns in the middle of nowhere :( We don't have any computer stores, let alone networking stores. Wal-Mart is about it! So, this is a pretty good deal for some of us :) It's damn good if you live in a big city though!
