Wow. 120k+ baht! That's amazing money for Thailand. I'd live like a king if I could command that type of salary.
Did they get their job while they were living in Thailand, or were they living in the states? These are teaching positions correct? It's impossible to land a teaching position without a degree in education. The school could lose its accreditation if they hired people who weren't actual teachers.
From the teachers I met > 100k is typical for the international schools. Even at the good private schools which by far outnumber international schools. Private tutoring can pay much, much more, but you have to build up a clientele who want private tutoring for their 5 - 10 year olds. That's all by word of mouth though. These are the parents who are sending their children off to college in Australia, UK, US, etc.
Then you have the vast majority of schools hiring non-degree holders, some without even ESL, who are there on tourist visas. These schools just want white faces around in order to get the parents to fork over their money. It's the people teaching here making 30k - 50k. These schools aren't going to lose their license - the country is just too corrupt. You're way beyond that level of scam school.
I wasn't involved in teaching, but an ex of mine was so I got to hear all about it on a regular basis from her and her teaching friends (Thai's and foreigners). She had she a graduate degree in English from the top school in the country and was more than a bit upset that foreign high school dropouts were making over 2x what she was because their skin was the right shade. Her speech and knowledge of English were much better than what even the brightest of those losers could manage, but the color of your skin is more important to people over there who don't speak the language well, if at all.
No idea if you'll have any luck applying for good teaching jobs if you're not there.
Trust me, 120k won't be living like a king. My monthly budget was 3x that when in Thailand and I wasn't living lavishly by any means. Living in downtown Bangkok could easily be as expensive as Hong Kong and Singapore (though I was living at the same standard I was accustomed to back in the US). Compared to the locals making 10k/month you might be living like a king, but their standard of living is below that of the people in the projects in Detroit.
