Is there a consensus winner for a cheap subcompact camera <$100?
I'm looking at the Nikon Coolpix L24 but will consider spending up to $50 more if there is a compelling choice for another model.

No, there is no "consesus" but there are a lot of good choices.

The L24 is an "update" to the L22, but he L22 has better image quality. Adorama has these refurbished by Nikon (better than new) for $85 for the L24 and $55 for the L22. I don't love the L-series Coolpix cameras, these are Nikons lowest end cameras.

Adorama also has a bunch of S-series cameras refurbished by Nikon (better than new) in the sub-$100 dollar range.

The Nikon Coolpix S210 @ $60 is a better choice than the L-series.

The Nikon Coolpix S600 is a neat choice @ $95.

Another good choice is the Canon PowerShot SD940IS @ $115. This is smaller than a credit card. (refurbished by Canon)
