100% CPU Usage

My computer is so slow and the CPU is always at 100%. In applications I only have this site and word. When typing the computer is delayed and it is like a few words behind. Not sure if this is related but after a reboot my internet will stop working sorta. Ill click to go to this site and both IE and firefox just immediately say done and dont even appaer to try and load the site. If I click the button in my favorites a few times eventually it will load up, but then once here I have to click each button a few times until it eventually loads.

Help.

I have adware and spybot and I get spyware constantly. Every time after rebooting I have new stuff. But I always delete it.
It's a althon 1.1tbird running xp pro, my zone alarm firewall keeps popping up with d12w.exe is trying to access the internet and that program is in the windows temp folder. I tried to delete it but aparently its running because it said drive protected or whatever.

See right now I just rebooted and everything on the net and stuff works fine and my cpu is bouncing from 8-12 or so. But after a few minutes it will go up, Ill tell you when.

Start Task Manager, turn to Processes page, make sure CPU column is displayed, click on column heading to sort in order of CPU time, and see which processes are using up your CPU.

Does the Performance page show that you are using more than your physical memory?

That's very wrong. How are you connected to the internet, and do you have a firewall?

System Idle process bounces from 85 to 99.

Now that I've brought it up it isnt doing it anymore, once it does it again I'll do that stuff.

I just installed XP a week ago, I have zone alarm but you have to click begin trial for it to start and I am thinking that in that 5 seconds or so that I am connected the stuff gets in. I am connected throught the schools network to the internet.

System Idle process bounces from 85 to 99.

Then you have no problem. Your CPU usage bounces from 1 to 15%. This is a common issue that *some* users have. They think system idle is the same as actual usage.

Another thing I forgot to mention. I'll be typing and then something will happen and its like someone is holding down ctrl because Ill hit a button AND THEN THE SHORTCUT FOR IT WILL POPUP, for example Ill hit b to type and the book will open its really bad. Oh AND SEE THOSE CAPS I DIDNT TOUCH a thing and they just come on and off randomly. I just opened outlook some how AND THIS MESSAGE TOOK me about 4 minutes to type because I keep hearing CLICKING LIKE A WINDOw is opening and then I have to click back here to continue typING BECAUSE THIS WIndow is no longer selected and yet there is no popup. This is really frustraing having to click in here ever 10 seconds and having to close all these other programs and windows i keep opening inadvertantly.

and when scrolling with my mouse wheel sometimes it will pause for a second and then the font will get huge

Ok i understand now that I look it appears that it is the remainder from 100 fromt he cpu usage. But right now its not slow I'll check it again later when it starts acting slow.

i would recommend re installing windows and then installing sp1 if you dont have it already. then activate the windows firewall and dl all the windows updates. get Adaware and some kind of antivirus and DONT USE INTERNET EXPLORER.

or put himself as a limited user when not installing or cinfiguring stuff to protect himself

See the thing is to reinstall windows I have to go buy another video card. I mean last time I got zone alarm and adware and spybot but I still have this stuff.

If it comes down to a reinstall, slipstream XPpro with SP2 that way the firewall will beactive even before windows loads and give you a chance to install everything without being nearly as vunerable. IMO the updated firewall is kind of nice especially if you aren't behind a physical firewall, NAT addressing from a router, ect.

If you reinstall, follow the suggestions under my Ongoing Prevention header on this page too (it's down the page a little). I have about 80 computers in my care at work, and this advice is derived partly from that background and partly from my observations here at the Forums. It might cramp your style at first to run a Limited account (and force all the other computer users to do the same), but if you do so, then you don't have much reason to fear using Internet Explorer. The most damage any of my "kids" has succeeded in doing, is to have their homepage changed.

That's not to say you shouldn't also get the rest of your security tight (firewalls, antivirus, patching, good strong passwords and a MBSA scan). Do it right, or do it over 😀

Don't know how I missed your guide mech, but I bookmarked it, thanks 🙂

Very welcome, and suggestions/additions are always welcomed 😀 I recently learned that even with WinXP Home, you can have Limited-class accounts, which I did not know, I thought everyone was an Admin under XP Home 😱

I gotta re-work that page somehow, it's too wordy 😛

Heres some more info. Everytime I run spybot I get these things, and I hit fix these problems but they are there everytime so I dont think they are getting fixed.

n-Case
Autorun settings (5ArVc2B)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\5ArVc2b

That one ^ apparently tries to access the internet because zonealarm says this application is trying to access the internet. I went ahead and searched and found it in my windows\temp folder and deleted it after shutting it down from the process with ctrl alt delete.

THen there is

Havce you tried a regular virus scanner?
My question now as well. I can't see anything there that a free copy of AVG shouldn't nuke for you.

I got norton and it found a few trojan's and stuff, it took care of them but now when I start my computer it says cant find spvool32.exe or something which norton said was a virus so I think there is still something in my registry telling my computer to load the virus. How do I fix this?
