When I start almost any application, eg, MS Word, Excel, etc, my CPU utilization jumps to 100% and the application takes several seconds to fully load (up to 10 seconds). I have 512mb memory with an 845PE mobo and 2.66 Pentium 4 CPU. This is not right somehow. Any suggestions?

Reboot does not remedy the delays, disk has been cleaned up, defraged, files and sectors of hard drive verified. Just baffles me as to what this might be. I have ordered some new memory, and if this persists I will build a new system from scratch and reinstall all software.

You got the IDE drivers installed? Sounds like the whole IDE subsystem is in legacy mode, hence the high cpu and slow load.

Take it to the Technical Support Forum.

Good suggestion; it does act as though the IDE is in legacy mode. I'll trouble shoot in that area.

Just did it and my speed is now acceptable, at least. Not instantaneous like I would hope a P4 2.66GHz would be; but 3 seconds to open a Word document and 2 seconds to close it. Thank you all for your help.

What OS are you using? I run into it on my work computer alot. That is running NT4.0. At login, it takes 30-60 seconds to get the CPU useage down from 100%. explorer.exe is the program that is the problem. Have you task manager open to the applications tab when you open up your documents so you can see what process is causing your problems.
