Re the "barely any room for passing" part, this isn't the first time I've read this about trail races. That would be incredibly frustrating for me, and that's part of the reason I don't do bigger road races which don't have wave starts. Few people really observe race etiquette these days, and I can't tell you the number of times I've been stuck behind 4 runners who are walking and chatting 4-across in the first mile of a 10K or half marathon yet who lined up with the 7 minute/mile crowd. It seems like the logjam problem would be much worse in trail races where there's so much less room to pass. I remember similar situations back when I used to race mt. bikes, and there was very little passing on tight courses.
