Fail on external HDs. They are still an excellent and cheap way to extend your storage space. Online storage is of course an option but one I think most people are not yet willing to abandon their HDs for.

Who wanna bet DVDs will outlive Bluray?

Perhaps but I doubt it. A year back I would have said maybe but the prices for Blu-Ray drives have come down a lot and the prices of large screen panels have also fallen a lot. Therefore more and more people now have a large enough screen to notice the difference between the 2 formats. The price for a Blu-Ray player is no longer an issue. The only thing that needs to happen now is for the price of the discs to drop which they are slowly doing so. At my local rental place Blu-Rays have been slowly eating up more and more floor space.

DVDs will be around for a long time as BR discs/players are still expensive. I love BR but will not buy BR to replace the DVDs I have already. I am however replacing old VHS movies with BR when the price is around $10-$15.

The discs still are expensive but Blu-Ray players can be had for just over $100 now and falling.

Yes the prices are falling fast and I should have clarified better. When the prices of the players gets around $70 for decent one. Also is there a consumer BR recorder out yet? A regular comsumer console I refer too. The BR disc for copying are still expensive also.

Why the fuck is MSN ripping off shitty articles?

I still maintain a land-line, despite my wife and I having cell phones. It only costs ~$24/month and having a powered means of communication in power outages is of significant importance. The TELCOs must have back-up power capacity per Federal law, I think...

***SFW*** WTF TELCO powered vibrators?! ***SFW***

Online storage would have to be reasonably priced and offer a ton of space before I'd consider it seriously. It would have to be quite compelling for people to prefer it over $80 1TB external drives. As it is right now, using external hard drives for backup is extremely cost effective.

I have 25GB of space on Microsoft's Skydrive completely for free. There's a limitation on per file size but it's still completely free. There are lesser online storage options than that from other companies that charge you for it.

Sony was trying to keep the disks artificially high, but the other studios have abandoned that. I see more and more sales on recently released Blu-rays for $15-20. I wouldn't be surprised by the end of the year that 90% of Blu-rays come out under $20 and older releases start dropping to $10.

Yeah it's like saying don't buy an internal combustion engine because in the future we'll all be on electric. Well, sure, but not now. External hard drives are still plenty useful.
